United Airlines has recently reduced many benefits for business class passengers, leaving customers unable to earn miles and access other perks.
Troubles with United Airlines Business Class
Recently, United Airlines made the decision to cut several benefits for customers booking low-cost business class tickets. They have begun charging fees for seat selection, eliminated the ability to change itineraries, and restricted access to the premium Polaris lounges, allowing entry only to the standard United Club. To make matters worse, the airline has also limited the ability to earn miles for these customers.
New Mileage Policies
Basic business class tickets will not allow mileage accumulation unless you have a MileagePlus membership or a United credit card. This means that flights in business class or premium economy will not help you upgrade your MileagePlus status. You can only earn Premier Qualifying Points, but these flights do not qualify for status upgrades.
Changes to Basic Tickets
As of April 2, United has also removed the ability to accumulate miles for basic tickets without a credit card. This has significantly reduced the ability to earn miles, with general members earning only 3 miles for every dollar spent on these tickets. This change affects not only economy tickets but also includes basic fares across all class types.
Member Reward Levels
There have also been changes to the reward levels for each member status. If you are a:
- General Member: earn 3 miles/$
- Silver: 2 miles/$ but 5 miles with a credit card
- Gold: 3 miles/$ but 6 miles with a credit card
- Platinum: 4 miles/$ but 7 miles with a credit card
- 1K: 6 miles/$ but 9 miles with a credit card

Requirements for Membership Status
To achieve MileagePlus membership status, you have two options: simply spend money or spend with a minimum number of flights. The current requirements are as follows:
- Silver: $6,000 spent or $5,000 with 15 flights
- Gold: $12,000 spent or $10,000 with 30 flights
- Platinum: $18,000 spent or $15,000 with 45 flights
- 1K: $28,000 spent or $22,000 with 60 flights
Will Delta Make Changes?
When compared to American Airlines and Delta, customers often find better options when purchasing low-cost business class tickets. Delta has announced that they will introduce basic fares for business and premium economy, but have yet to disclose the accompanying conditions.
Consider Airline Choices
Smart customers should pay attention to the differences in fare regulations. When other airlines do not impose the same restrictions as United, consider choosing another airline, at least for the time being. Ultimately, United's business class seats do not offer anything more than those on Delta or American Airlines, and the food on American is even better.
Lounge Services
Delta's business class lounges are also rated higher compared to United's. While United serves better wine, many customers find that overall service and experience are more important factors.
In summary, this change by United Airlines has created many challenges for customers, and choosing an airline should be carefully considered to ensure the best value for every trip.
