Discover Unique Flower Festivals Away from the Crowds

I'm a huge fan of cherry blossom season, but the overwhelming crowds that come to view the flowers can be unbearable. This year, I’m determined to find alternative flower festivals that still capture the vibrant essence of spring without the need to jostle through throngs of people or pay exorbitant hotel prices. Luckily, there are plenty of wonderful destinations around the world for flower lovers who prefer to avoid the crowds.

Canada's Tulip Festival

While tulips are often associated with the Netherlands, if you want to escape the congestion of Amsterdam, consider attending the Tulip Festival in Ottawa, Canada. Every May, over a million tulips bloom, brightening parks and lakeside pathways with stunning colors like red, yellow, purple, and orange. This beautiful tradition began in 1945 when the Dutch royal family sent thousands of tulip bulbs to Canada as a thank-you for their hospitality during World War II. The most picturesque spots in Canada’s capital include Commissioners Park and the shores of Dow's Lake.

The Canada Tulip Festival runs from May 8 to 18, featuring activities such as music performances, art displays, and a spectacular fireworks and drone show on May 18. If you want to stay close to the festivities, the Fairmont Chateau Laurier is the top choice, with room rates starting at $357 per night.

Jacaranda Blooms in Mexico City

Every spring, Mexico City bursts into shades of purple from jacaranda trees. If you enjoy the ambiance of cherry blossoms in Japan, you’ll find a similar vibe here. In the 1920s, a Japanese gardener introduced jacaranda trees to the city, creating a cherry blossom-like atmosphere. Although there isn’t an official festival, from mid-March to April, the vibrant purple canopies become the perfect backdrop for leisurely walks, photo ops, and picnics.

My favorite spot for viewing jacaranda blooms is the Condesa neighborhood, particularly Parque Mexico. This oval park spans 9 acres, providing a green oasis amidst the artistic district. For even more blossoms, you can visit the expansive Chapultepec Park, which offers 1,700 acres of lush greenery.

Portland Rose Festival

Once you visit Portland, Oregon, you’ll understand why it’s known as the "City of Roses." Late spring sees the city in full bloom with around 10,000 rose bushes. The highlight is the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, where you can admire thousands of roses set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Hood.

The Portland Rose Festival takes place from May 22 to June 7, featuring events such as a city fair, parades, fireworks, and riverside celebrations. A standout event this year is the CareOregon Grand Floral Starlight Parade, showcasing dazzling floats and marching bands.

Feria de Patios in Córdoba, Spain

Córdoba is known as the "City of Flowers," and in May, it hosts a variety of floral events. One festival worth attending is the Feria de Patios, which runs from May 4 to 17. The festival kicks off with a flower parade called the Battle of the Flowers. Following this, traditional homes in the old town with beautiful flower-filled courtyards open their doors for visitors to explore and vote for their favorite courtyard.

This festival also features vibrant flamenco performances and delicious local cuisine. If you decide to stay, the NH Collection Palacio de Córdoba is a stunning hotel located in the historic Jewish quarter, with rates starting at $208 per night.

Rochester Lavender Festival

If you love floral scents, springtime in Rochester, New York, offers an unforgettable experience. The Lavender Festival takes place at Highland Park, home to over 1,800 lavender bushes with 500 different varieties. The best time to see the blooms is typically in mid-May, when clusters of purple, lavender, and white flowers blanket the grassy hills of the park.

Although these flower festivals may not be as famous as cherry blossoms, they provide an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature while immersing yourself in delightful cultural experiences and a vibrant festival atmosphere. Enjoying flowers without the crowds? Now that's something special!
