American Express has announced two significant updates: an expansion of flight discounts for Platinum cardholders, but the discontinuation of access to Lufthansa lounges starting in October.

New Flight Discounts for Amex Platinum Cardholders

Recently, American Express shared two important updates for users of the Amex Platinum and Business Platinum cards. The good news is that the flight discount program for Platinum members has been expanded, but the unfortunate news is that access to Lufthansa lounges will end starting in October.

New Airfare Program

The newly launched program, named Platinum Member Airfares, will help Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders save significantly when booking flights through Amex Travel. This program will replace the previous international airfare program and recommended flights.

Eligible cardholders can now enjoy discounts on domestic flights with certain airlines, in addition to saving around 10% on international flights in business, first, and premium economy classes. According to Amex, users can save an average of about $100 per ticket.

Rewards Points Calculation

It’s important to note that Amex Platinum cardholders will earn up to 5 Membership Rewards points for every dollar spent on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, as long as total spending does not exceed $500,000 per year. This means you can save on airfare while also accumulating rewards points for future travels.

Additionally, if you book tickets for up to seven other passengers on the same reservation, they will also receive similar benefits.

End of Lufthansa Lounge Access

A more noteworthy update is the termination of the partnership with Lufthansa for lounge access starting October 1st. Previously, Amex Platinum cardholders could access Lufthansa's Business Lounges when flying economy and the Senator Lounges when flying business class.

Restrictions on Lounge Access

Centurion cardholders also had access to first-class lounges at Frankfurt and Munich airports, but this will no longer be the case starting in October. This means that many may feel deprived of a service they had come to rely on.

However, some Lufthansa lounges are still part of the Priority Pass network, so if you are an eligible cardholder, you may still have indirect access to these lounges.

Overall Assessment

The launch of the Platinum Member Airfares platform is a significant advancement for Platinum card members, allowing them to save more on domestic flights. However, the loss of access to Lufthansa lounges is undoubtedly a major setback for those accustomed to this service when flying to Europe.

Cardholders should weigh this change and make the most of the remaining benefits before access ends at the end of September.
