Starlux Airlines, a new player from Taiwan, raises questions about its first-class offerings. Is the premium price truly justified?
Introducing Starlux Airlines
Fresh and promising, Starlux Airlines is a standout carrier from Taiwan. Launched in early 2020, the airline swiftly expanded its route network, particularly for transpacific flights.
Currently, Starlux operates flights from Taipei to Los Angeles, Ontario, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle. Notably, the airline utilizes the Airbus A350, equipped with first-class amenities that are rare among new airlines today.
First Class on Starlux's Airbus A350
Starlux offers a first-class experience with just four seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. Interestingly, there are no partitions between first class and business class, making it feel quite similar to a front row in business. While Starlux's service quality is commendable, many are surprised that the airline hasn't invested more in its first-class product.
The seats feature modern elements like 60-inch doors, privacy dividers, 32-inch 4K screens with Bluetooth sound, and a zero-gravity mode, but they still fall short of making a strong impression as a top-tier first-class product. This may leave many passengers contemplating whether the splurge is worth it.
Investing in First-Class Service
Starlux focuses not just on the product but also heavily invests in service. First-class passengers in Taipei enjoy door-to-door chauffeur service, as well as access to the VIP Huan Yu lounge. In Los Angeles, first-class travelers can even use a private suite with a car service from the plane, allowing them to skip the airport check-in process entirely!
Onboard service is equally luxurious, featuring delicious meals, caviar, gifts from La Mer, and more. However, the big question remains: are these services enough to compensate for the lack of clear separation between first class and business class?

The Price Tag of First Class
When Starlux first introduced its first-class service, many expected the pricing to be more reasonable compared to business class. In reality, the opposite is true. Since its launch, Starlux's first-class fares have remained high, often triple the cost of business class tickets.
A first-class seat on transpacific flights typically starts at $8,000 or more, while intra-Asia flights hover around $2,500. Even though passengers receive full ground service, the onboard experience feels considerably diminished.
The Challenges of Selling First-Class Seats
Clearly, many airlines charge high prices for first class but offer various ways to secure better deals. Starlux, however, takes a different approach. The airline offers very limited opportunities to redeem points for first class, and upgrading from business to first class comes at a steep cost of around $5,000.
This situation makes it quite challenging for Starlux to fill its first-class seats. Despite having only four seats, attracting passengers willing to pay such prices is no easy feat. Additionally, while Taipei is a wonderful city, its ticket prices cannot compete with those of Hong Kong or Singapore.
The Current State of First-Class Sales on Starlux
While I can't definitively assess the pricing model and demand for first class in Taiwan, the limited number of seats makes it easy to review how many have been sold recently. For instance, from mid-April to mid-May 2026, how many seats were booked on flights to the U.S.?
To provide some context, on the Taipei to San Francisco route, only five out of a total of 168 seats were sold, which equates to a mere 3% occupancy. Similarly, on the return from San Francisco to Taipei, only two seats were booked. From Seattle to Taipei, not a single seat was reserved.
Conclusion
Given this situation, it’s clear that the airline’s revenue system is facing challenges. If Starlux genuinely aims to maximize revenue, something is amiss here. What can Starlux do to improve this situation? If not, they may struggle to maintain their first-class offerings in the future.
