Discover the Bayeux Tapestry in Reading, England, a unique cultural destination packed with intriguing surprises.

The Bayeux Tapestry: A Significant Cultural Artifact

The Bayeux Tapestry, commissioned by Odo, the Bishop of Bayeux and half-brother to William the Conqueror, is not just an artistic masterpiece but also a crucial historical record of the Norman invasion in 1066. This 70-meter-long tapestry is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, you don’t need to travel to London to admire it; you can visit Reading, where an impressive replica of this tapestry awaits.

The Reading Replica

I found myself in Reading, the capital of Berkshire, to see the replica of the Bayeux Tapestry in England, which depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and William, Duke of Normandy's conquest of England. This replica was created in 1885 by Elizabeth and Thomas Wardle from Leek, Staffordshire. They aimed to produce an accurate copy of the original tapestry, which is actually an embroidered piece on linen.

Over a year, 35 women from the Leek Embroidery Society worked diligently to complete this replica. They used dyed wool to match the original colors and followed photographs to recreate even the smallest details. Some symbols were adjusted to align with Victorian social norms. The replica has since become an important cultural symbol, exhibited in various locations from England to the USA and Germany by the late 19th century.

Reading Museum and Visiting Details

The Bayeux Tapestry replica has been on display at the Reading Museum since 1993. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday and has free admission; however, for £8 (approximately 240,000 VND), you can join one of the guided tours lasting an hour, held at 2:30 PM on Thursdays and 2 PM on Saturdays, providing deeper insights into this unique artwork.

Exploring Reading

Don’t forget to take some time to explore the city of Reading. It’s not only famous for the tapestry replica but also boasts the historic Abbey area and a vibrant shopping district. Abbey Reading, established in 1121 by Henry I, the fourth son of William the Conqueror, was once one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in medieval Europe.

For a lovely place to stay, The Roseate Hotel is an excellent choice. Located on a quiet street overlooking Forbury Gardens, which was once part of the Reading Abbey, this building dates back to 1911 and features 23 classic guest rooms and 32 modern apartments. The hotel’s interior is a perfect blend of classic and contemporary styles, complete with elegant decor and full amenities.

Guests can enjoy dinner at the Reading Room restaurant, which offers a diverse menu with plenty of options. It’s a wonderful way to wrap up your day of exploring Reading’s fascinating offerings.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
