Explore Queenstown Lontong, a renowned eatery famous for its lontong in Singapore. Discover delicious dishes and useful information for Vietnamese travelers.
Introduction to Queenstown Lontong
Queenstown Lontong, located in the Margaret Drive Food Centre in Singapore, has been serving up delicious lontong since the 1960s. This is not just an ordinary restaurant; it's a place that has preserved traditional flavors over decades, maintaining the same sign since its inception. The eatery attracts a diverse crowd, from business professionals to morning joggers.
Culinary Experience at Queenstown Lontong
When I arrived around 8 AM, I found myself waiting in a long line. Everyone seemed excited to indulge in the signature dishes offered here. I chose the Lontong (S$4) and Mee Soto (S$4), two popular items on the menu. The Lontong is made from rice cakes, boiled eggs, tofu, and sayur lodeh, topped with a spoonful of sambal. Notably, the broth is fragrant and rich, providing a warm start to the morning.
Discovering Unique Flavors
The broth of the Lontong is creamy from coconut milk and has a hint of spice, creating a perfect balance of flavors. The dish is enhanced with crispy fried anchovies and grated coconut, making for an enjoyable dining experience. However, those who are not accustomed to the sweetness in the dish may find it a bit overwhelming after a few bites.
Feeling a bit satiated from the Lontong, I decided to cleanse my palate with Mee Soto. The golden noodles, tender chicken, and fresh greens created an appealing bowl of noodles. Although the sambal seemed milder than what I'm used to, it provided a refreshing taste that wasn't overly sweet, making it ideal for refreshing the palate. The chicken was cooked to perfection, tender and easy to chew, harmonizing wonderfully with the soothing broth.

Information for Vietnamese Travelers
If you plan to visit Queenstown Lontong, keep in mind that it's a popular spot in Singapore and tends to get crowded in the mornings. If you're traveling from Vietnam, be prepared to apply for a Singapore visa (short-term tourist visa) and book your flight from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi (HAN). A meal here costs around 70,000 - 90,000 VND, which is quite reasonable for a hearty breakfast.
Conclusion
While I don't fully agree with the level of sweetness in the Lontong, its survival through three generations and the love from patrons suggest that I might be in the minority. Nevertheless, my rare breakfast experience at Queenstown Lontong left a positive impression, particularly with the Mee Soto.
I will definitely recommend Queenstown Lontong to anyone looking to experience traditional Malay cuisine in Singapore, making it an ideal spot for a family weekend breakfast. As for me, I might still prefer a full night’s sleep.
