Penang: The Island in the Sea Beyond George Town

Penang is a destination I’ve returned to three times, spending nearly half a year exploring its wonders. From the delicious food in George Town to its unique historical remnants, as well as its beautiful beaches and lush tropical trails, Penang offers countless delights waiting to be discovered.

I’ve had many unforgettable experiences here, like taking a morning trip to the top of Penang Hill to see the leaf monkeys, wandering around the butterfly sanctuary for hours, or enjoying a bowl of Laksa at my favorite stall in the George Town market.

Highlights of Penang

While George Town is undoubtedly a must-visit when in Penang, there’s so much more to explore if you want to escape the urban hustle. Here are a few places that I highly recommend.

Penang Hill

If you're looking to escape the city heat, Penang Hill is the perfect retreat. This spot was once a colonial-era resort to dodge the tropical warmth. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the island, including the narrow strait, famous bridges, and Butterworth on the mainland.

To reach the top, you can take bus number 204 from George Town (about a 45-minute ride) or opt for the funicular train, which costs RM30 for a round trip. It’s best to go early or late to avoid long queues on weekends and holidays.

Hiking Up Penang Hill

If you love a challenge, consider hiking to the summit instead of taking the funicular. There are several trails, but I recommend the Moon Gate route starting from the Botanical Gardens. This path offers plenty of shade and opportunities to spot wildlife.

Start your hike early in the morning when the air is cooler and animals are more active. Don’t forget to bring an offline map, wear comfortable shoes, and pack some water!

Kek Lok Si Temple

After descending from Penang Hill, you can walk to Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Southeast Asia. This site not only features unique architecture but also provides a wonderfully serene atmosphere.

The temple is distinguished by the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pagoda, which combines Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles. Additionally, the towering 36-meter statue of Guanyin is a must-see.

Air Itam Market

After your temple visit, make sure to stop by the nearby Air Itam Market to sample some local cuisine. Don’t miss out on trying a bowl of the authentic Laksa that this area is famous for!
