Explore Oiishii Corner, a budget-friendly halal Japanese eatery in Toa Payoh, offering a diverse menu and excellent quality.
A Culinary Experience in Toa Payoh
Toa Payoh is renowned for its diverse food centers, and Oiishii Corner stands out as a delightful spot you shouldn't miss. Situated in the Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre, this eatery offers fantastic Japanese dishes at affordable prices, all while being completely halal.
Unique Japanese Flavors
Oiishii Corner's menu is extensive, featuring dishes like Teriyaki Chicken Ramen (S$7.50), Chicken Katsu Curry Don (S$6), and Salmon Teri Don (S$6.50). Notably, the restaurant serves delectable sushi, including California Maki, priced between S$4 and S$8. These dishes are not only delicious but also beautifully presented, enticing diners from the very first glance.
A Must-Try: Halal Ramen
During my visit, I opted for the Oiishii Beef Don (S$6.50) and Inari Ramen (S$6). The ramen was rich and flavorful, distinctly different from typical ramen offerings, with a savory broth that was more than just chicken stock. Each bite of the ramen boasted perfect chewiness and satisfaction. Compared to bowls of ramen at upscale restaurants, I found the quality here to be equally impressive.
Special Flavors
Inari, the crispy tofu pockets filled with premium broth, provided a delightful sweet and salty combination. While it wasn't entirely to my taste, the crispy texture piqued my curiosity. Another highlight in the ramen bowl was the soft-boiled egg yolk, adding creaminess and a delightful flavor when enjoyed with the noodles. Tiny corn kernels also contributed a touch of sweetness and freshness to the dish.
Beef Don Experience
Moving on to the Oiishii Beef Don, I was once again captivated by its enticing presentation. The owner kindly warned that this dish has a spicy kick, and they balanced it out with ingredients like cucumber and mayonnaise. The beef was tender, reminiscent of teriyaki sauce I had enjoyed in McDonald's Samurai burger.

Attention to Detail
The restaurant was generous in its use of sauce for the beef, allowing the rice to soak up the flavors beautifully. This created a wonderful harmony between the sticky rice and the sweet-salty taste of the meat. Notably, the rice here is typically short-grained, making it sticky and moist, reminiscent of authentic Japanese cuisine.
Overall Impressions
While Oiishii Corner doesn’t claim to be an authentic Japanese restaurant, I was genuinely impressed with the quality and service provided. In the vibrant atmosphere of Toa Payoh, where reasonable prices and quality are ensured, Oiishii Corner is a fantastic choice for Japanese food lovers seeking a refreshing experience.
