I never thought I'd visit Ubi, but after hearing about DMQ Ban Mian and their handmade QQ noodles, I couldn't resist the temptation.

My Journey to Ubi

I never imagined I would voluntarily travel to Ubi, a place quite far from my usual haunts in Singapore. However, the news about DMQ Ban Mian and their handmade QQ noodles stirred my ban mian-loving soul, prompting me to set off immediately.

DMQ Ban Mian is located within the Ubi DMQ Eating House, just a short walk from Ubi MRT station. This noodle shop is famous for its handmade ban mian, you mian, and mee hoon kueh, all crafted fresh daily. For nearly 12 years, it has been a favorite among locals, and witnessing the bustling scene of diners eagerly slurping their bowls was quite impressive.

Flavors from DMQ Ban Mian

Having enjoyed ban mian for many years, I’ve realized that nothing beats the authentic taste of freshly made, handmade noodles. The chewy, glistening noodles at the counter seemed to beckon me. With high expectations, I could hardly wait to dive into their flavors.

After perusing numerous online reviews, I decided to order the Dry Fortune Pork Ball Ban Mian (priced at 7 SGD). As a fan of dry ban mian, this felt like a natural choice for me. Although 7 SGD might seem a bit steep for a bowl of noodles, the generous portion I received made it worth every penny.

The bowl came with four large pork balls, a generous serving of chye sim, and a sprinkle of scallions and anchovies on top. When I mixed everything together, the noodles were enveloped in a smooth brown sauce. It was absolutely delicious! The ban mian noodles were perfectly chewy and had just the right amount of bounce, each strand soaking up the rich sauce. While some places serve bland sauces, here it was harmoniously flavorful and delightful.

Additionally, a small plate of chili sauce was served on the side for those who like a bit of heat. This sauce packed a spicy punch, and I highly recommend adding it, as the aromatic garlic flavor will elevate your dish even more.

Discovering Lala You Mian

You might have noticed something missing – the egg! I soon realized that the egg was cleverly hidden in the bowl of broth beside me, and I quickly stirred it into my noodles. However, I must admit that I found the broth to be a bit off-putting in its thickness. While the noodles were fantastic, I was somewhat disappointed with the broth.

Nonetheless, the real stars were the pork balls. These little gems reminded me not to judge a dish by its appearance – inside each ball was a delicious chunk of minced meat. It felt like eating xiao long bao, but with a meatball “wrapper” instead of a dumpling skin, and the flavorful broth was truly enticing.

Enjoying the Lala You Mian

The second bowl I ordered was the Lala You Mian (priced at 6.50 SGD). Finding a reasonably priced Lala noodle dish in ban mian is quite rare, so I couldn't pass it up! This time, I opted for the broth version. Though I had to wait a little longer for my dish, when it arrived, it looked just like the bowl of noodles you’d expect – with thin handmade noodles nestled in a rich, cloudy broth full of spinach.

I even checked how many Lala clams were in the bowl and counted no fewer than 10. Amazing! Moreover, these clams were incredibly sweet and fresh. Even after soaking in the broth for a while, the noodles remained firm and retained their chewiness.

Wrapping Up My Culinary Journey

The last bowl I ordered was the Dry Pork You Mian (priced at 5.30 SGD), without any greens or scallions for a picky eater. Once again, the noodles maintained their firmness and deliciousness. The bowl also contained minced meat and a few slices of lean pork. I wished they could have added a bit more noodles and meat, as the portion felt a bit small.

After all, I just want to say one thing – why didn’t I discover DMQ Ban Mian sooner in my life? I truly enjoyed my meal at DMQ Ban Mian. The handmade noodles alone are worth the trip to Ubi. They are delicious and deserve all the praise. I highly recommend trying the dry noodles with that fantastic sauce, and don’t forget to order the Fortune Pork Ball for a complete experience.
