Dive into the enchanting world of sea turtles with these nine incredible destinations, from Oman to Costa Rica. Discover nesting seasons, conservation efforts, and exciting tours.

Introduction to Sea Turtles

Sea turtles, with their majestic beauty and gentle nature, have captured the hearts of nature lovers around the globe. Found in the warmest waters, these remarkable creatures often return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, sea turtle populations have significantly declined over the past few decades, with six out of seven species now classified as endangered. Despite this, there are still many places around the world where you can safely encounter them while promoting conservation efforts.

1. Oman

In Oman, from May to October, thousands of turtles migrate to nest. Approximately 20,000 sea turtles come ashore on the Arabian Peninsula, where they dig nests and lay between 50,000 to 60,000 eggs each year. Beaches like Ras Al Hadd and the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve are excellent spots for turtle watching. If you find yourself in Muscat but can't venture far, the Shangri-La Muscat hotel is conveniently located near one of the country's prime nesting areas, complete with a dedicated team of turtle conservationists ready to assist guests.

2. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for turtle watching, especially at Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast, which is home to a large population of green turtles. The nesting season runs from July to early October, with August being peak time. Notably, Costa Rica is famous for the phenomenon known as 'arribada,' where millions of olive ridley turtles come ashore simultaneously to lay their eggs. This spectacular event occurs at only nine locations worldwide, two of which are in Costa Rica.

3. Cayman Islands

Sea turtles have become a cultural icon in the Cayman Islands, appearing on currency and the national flag. Spotts Beach is particularly famous for frequent turtle visits. The Cayman Turtle Centre has been operating for over 20 years with a sea turtle breeding program that has successfully helped restore green turtle populations in the Caribbean.

4. Australia

In Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is where you can encounter six out of the seven sea turtle species. However, we recommend exploring the Coral Coast, specifically Ningaloo Reef, where you can find green, leatherback, and flatback turtles. The summer months from November to March are ideal for witnessing turtles nesting.

5. Borneo

The three small islands of Turtle Island National Park in Borneo, including Selingan, Bakungan Kecil, and Gulisan, are perfect for turtle watching. Make sure to book in advance at Sabah Park for the best chance to see turtles nesting from July to October. Divers also flock to Sipadan Island for the opportunity to swim with turtles.

6. Jamaica

Jamaica is a haven for various turtle species, including the endangered hawksbill turtle. This species nests from April to August, and hotels like Half Moon and Jamaica Inn actively participate in their conservation. Treasure Beach is one of the best places to observe hawksbill turtles during the nesting season.

7. Florida Keys, USA

The Florida Keys are home to five out of the seven species of sea turtles. Notably, Dry Tortugas National Park is an excellent spot for viewing loggerhead turtles during their nesting season from May to September, with around 15,000 hatchlings emerging each year. The city of Marathon is also home to the world's first and only turtle hospital, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured turtles.

8. Cape Verde

The beaches of Cape Verde are also ideal for turtle nesting. You can visit the archipelagos filled with charming islands and join guided turtle watching tours. Remember, the best time for turtle observation is from June to October.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

When planning your sea turtle watching trip, be aware of visa requirements depending on your destination. For Costa Rica, a visa is needed for longer stays, while Oman offers a 30-day visa policy for Vietnamese visitors. Most flights to these destinations depart from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, with ticket prices ranging from 10 to 15 million VND, depending on the season. Additionally, look into conservation tours to have a more impactful and sustainable experience.
