Discover Nasi Lemak Wanjo in Kuala Lumpur, a culinary hotspot known for its noteworthy reviews. What’s new on my second visit?
Nasi Lemak Wanjo: Exploring Traditional Flavors
Nasi Lemak Wanjo in Kampung Baru is one of the most renowned dining spots in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. If you’re planning a visit, get ready for an exciting journey into the realm of this national dish. I first visited in 2021 and, to be honest, it didn’t quite meet my expectations. However, with its immense popularity and thousands of positive reviews, I decided to return and see if there had been any improvements.
Getting to Nasi Lemak Wanjo
Nasi Lemak Wanjo is conveniently located just 250 meters from the Kampung Baru LRT station, making it easily accessible. Travelers from Vietnam can fly from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi (HAN) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL). Flight prices typically range from 2 million to 4 million VND for a one-way ticket, depending on when you book.
Culinary Experience at Nasi Lemak Wanjo
Upon arrival, I noticed that the restaurant had been renovated into a more modern establishment compared to the traditional warung it used to be. Although it was a bit warm inside, they do have an air-conditioned area available for a small fee.
I ordered a plate of nasi lemak with coconut rice, sambal, ikan bilis, and a piece of fried chicken. The sambal is a must-try, but this time I opted for the red chicken (ayam merah) as the fried chicken didn’t look very appealing.

Food Review
The price for the meal was around RM11.50 (approximately 60,000 VND), which isn’t too expensive. However, the sambal I tried this time was overly sweet and lacked the depth of flavor I was expecting. Perhaps it hadn’t been cooked long enough, missing the layer of oil that enhances the taste. The coconut rice was quite unusual, lacking the sticky texture I’m used to. The ikan bilis was rather thick, accompanied by fresh cucumber.
Experience with the Red Chicken
As for the red chicken, while I’m not particularly picky, it seemed overcooked, with a texture similar to white meat. The sauce was also too sweet, not highlighting the dish’s flavor. On the plus side, they didn’t use the same sambal for the red chicken but created a separate sauce.
Rendang Ayam: A Taste of Three Regions
My dining companion ordered the Nasi Lemak with Rendang Ayam (RM11.50), which left us more satisfied because the chicken was very tender and flavorful, true to its traditional taste. However, when we cut into the boiled egg, we were disappointed to find it had an unusual color and a slightly mushy texture.
Conclusion: Is It Worth a Visit?
In the end, it’s hard to understand why Nasi Lemak Wanjo is so beloved. I had hoped for a better experience since 2021, but I still found it lacking. While there may have been positive changes, the flavors didn’t quite meet my expectations. Perhaps it was just an off day for me. Nonetheless, if you’re a fan of nasi lemak, this spot is a must-visit when you’re in Kuala Lumpur.
