Mooney International has proposed a buyout of Spirit Airlines. Let's explore this ambitious aviation reconstruction plan.
Overview of the Proposal to Acquire Spirit Airlines
Mooney International has officially made a proposal to acquire Spirit Airlines along with its related assets. This news comes as a shock, especially since Spirit Airlines ceased operations on May 2nd and is in the process of liquidation, affecting around 17,000 employees. Until now, Mooney was not a name we had heard in this context, so I reached out to Connor Johnson, the CEO of the company, to learn more about their plans.
The Plan to Create an Aviation Ecosystem
Johnson described this initiative as part of a larger structure, where Mooney International, Spirit Airlines, and SEAir will collaborate to create value through investment and innovation. They intend to develop a platform that connects the three airlines under a membership program they call Air Pass. They have even begun selling these Air Passes, priced from $450 to $7,500, despite no airline currently operating.
SEAir: The Active Airline
SEAir is the only airline among the three that currently has operational aircraft. Johnson mentioned that SEAir, based in Clark, Philippines, is now focused on cargo transport after selling its passenger segment to Cebu Pacific. The airline operates two Boeing 737 freighters and plans to relaunch passenger services.
The Acquisition of the Aircraft Manufacturer
The Mooney that readers may recognize is the famous piston aircraft manufacturer based in Kerrville, Texas. Johnson clarified that this is a private company he intends to acquire, not one he directly owns. Mooney has gone through 13 bankruptcies and has a history of multiple ownership changes. Johnson plans to expand production, including the manufacture of light sport aircraft, two-seat helicopters, and even rescue parachute systems.
Plans to Enter the Mexican Market
Mooney International will be a new airline headquartered in Mexico City. Johnson revealed that they have been allocated 600 hectares of land to build a new hub at AIFA airport in the capital. In the meantime, the airline will begin operations under SEAir's license, with plans to open pilot training academies in the Philippines, Mexico, Florida, South Africa, and India.

Flight Routes and the Future of Spirit
Johnson envisions a vast network with 120 destinations, 500 daily flights, serving 100 million passengers annually and generating $6 billion in revenue. He stated that they could achieve 100 million passengers a year through the three airlines. However, long-haul routes such as Orlando to London or Orlando to Dubai face stiff competition from British Airways and Emirates.
Financial Questions
Johnson acknowledged that one of the biggest challenges for any acquisition proposal is securing funding. He confirmed that the proposal includes financing of approximately $7 billion, with $3.2 billion earmarked for the acquisition of Spirit. However, he declined to disclose specific details about the funding sources, only mentioning that these funds come from private family offices.
Commitment to Spirit Employees
Johnson particularly emphasized that their plan is not just about the acquisition but also about rehiring Spirit employees. He criticized the bonuses that Spirit's management received during the company's downturn and highlighted that regaining the trust of the employees is the most challenging hurdle they need to overcome.
Conclusion: Hope for the Future
What Johnson presents is a grand plan with a vision for manufacturing, pilot training, and three airlines across four continents. He has committed to completing the acquisition by the end of June, with plans for construction in Mexico City to advance in July. These milestones will test the viability of the project, especially as Mooney International attempts to revive Spirit Airlines.
