Day One: Hiking from Normanton le Heath to Hastings Retreat

My journey began at Jubilee Woods, a newly established forest on an old mining site, created in 2012 to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The trail led me downhill past a large lake before climbing up to the village of Normanton le Heath. Here, I joined the National Forest Way, a winding 75-mile path that traverses the National Forest.

The hike took me through fields to Packington, where I crossed a cemetery and navigated the bustling A42 road. This experience brought me to Willesby Park Golf Course, where I enjoyed the tranquil ambiance of nature. My next stop was Hastings Retreat, where I'd spend the next two nights, surrounded by stunning countryside views and a lake below. I also discovered Naughty Hare, a small gin distillery where I participated in a tasting tour led by co-owner Gabriela Silion.

Day Two: Biking from Hastings Retreat to The Milking Parlour

On the second day, I explored by bike to Hicks Lodge, the National Forest's Cycling Centre, located in a former mining area now transformed into bike and walking trails. I continued past Moira Canal Basin and the restored kiln building, then joined an old footpath and a stretch of railway.

I met Dave McDowell, a well-known local beekeeper. He promotes sustainable beekeeping in the National Forest and produces high-quality honey while hosting educational experiences for the community. The journey continued along quiet roads, passing through small villages, including Smisby, which features a jail built into the church walls.

Exploring Local Culture

On my way back to Hastings Retreat, I walked along the National Forest Way, encountering chestnut trees and wildflowers. Although I got a bit lost in the woods, the surrounding scenery with vibrant flowers under the bright sunlight made it worthwhile. I retraced my steps and stopped at the town of Ashby de la Zouch to explore the ruins of a castle that once served as a base for Royalist supporters during the English Civil War.

Day Three: Biking from Hastings Retreat to Quorn Station

On the final day of my journey, I visited the House and Garden 1620, one of the oldest buildings in Leicestershire, offering insight into life in the 1620s. From there, I rode along the Sustrans trail through Snibston Colliery Park, one of the best-preserved mining sites in the country.

The landscape began to change as I climbed the rocky hills of Charnwood Forest Geopark. One of the highest points is Mount St Bernard Abbey, known for producing the UK's exclusive Trappist beer, Tynt Meadow. I continued to Beacon Hill Country Park, which once featured a beacon to warn locals of danger.
