Discover Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, with its unique attractions and useful information for Vietnamese travelers.

Introduction to Paramaribo

Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname, is a surprisingly intriguing stop on your journey through South and Central America. Although it wasn’t part of my original itinerary, traveling through northern Brazil led me to this city, which offers a wealth of cultural experiences.

What makes Paramaribo special is its rich cultural influence from the Dutch colonial era. This is evident in the language, architecture, and customs of the locals, creating a vibrant tapestry in the heart of South America.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

Before you set off, here are a few things to keep in mind: Vietnamese citizens do not need a visa to enter Suriname for up to 90 days, but be sure to check for the latest updates. Flights from Vietnam to Paramaribo typically require layovers in major cities like Amsterdam, São Paulo, or Miami. Round-trip airfare can range from 20 to 30 million VND, depending on when you book your tickets.

The currency in Suriname is the Surinamese Dollar (SRD), with an exchange rate of approximately 1 USD to 38 SRD. The local time zone is GMT -3, which is a 10-hour difference from Vietnam.

Must-Experience Activities in Paramaribo

1. Explore the Historical Center

Kick off your adventure by strolling through the historical center, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The well-preserved colonial wooden architecture not only offers impressive beauty but also stands out from other colonial cities in South America.

Take your time walking along Henck Arron Street towards Waterkant to admire the Dutch-influenced buildings. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the golden light accentuates the architectural splendor.

2. Visit the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral

The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, one of the largest churches in South America, is a must-visit landmark. Its impressive neo-Gothic architecture, built entirely of wood, will leave you with a lasting impression from the very first glance.

3. Discover Fort Zeelandia

Fort Zeelandia is a repository of many historical tales of Suriname. Once a colonial fortress, it now serves as a museum featuring fascinating exhibitions about the nation's history. The ideal visiting hours are in the morning from 9 AM to 2 PM, and on Sundays, you can join a guided tour at 10:30 AM.

Admission is 500 SRD (approximately 13 USD). This is one of the best places to learn about Suriname's rich history and culture.

4. Enjoy the Sunset at Waterkant

To wrap up your day of exploration, head to Waterkant, where you can unwind by the Suriname River. This is a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike to enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking sunsets.

The cafes and restaurants along the riverside are perfect for sipping drinks while soaking in the romantic scenery as the sun sets.
