Koalas in New South Wales have faced the threat of extinction for decades. Tourism is playing a crucial role in the conservation efforts for this iconic Australian species. Koala Exploration at Port Stephens

At the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, which opened in 2020, I had the chance to observe koalas in their natural habitat. With only around 300 koalas identified living in the wild in this area, conservation efforts here are absolutely essential.

Standing in front of a eucalyptus tree, I watched a koala sound asleep, feeling the tranquility of the place. While it may not have been the wild forest I had envisioned, the thrill of witnessing a koala in nature for the first time filled me with satisfaction. The four-hour drive from Sydney was definitely worth it for nature and animal lovers.

Conservation Efforts

Despite the alarming situation for koalas, there are positive signs. The Great Koala National Park project is underway, aiming to protect their habitat. Once completed, this project will create a conservation corridor that is more than twice the size of England's Lake District.

Additionally, many ecotourism initiatives are emerging, supporting koala conservation efforts. At Guulabaa, an Indigenous activity center, visitors can not only tour the area but also engage in activities that preserve local culture.

Experience at Guulabaa

Upon arriving at Guulabaa, I was greeted by a giant koala statue. Here, there is not only the opportunity to observe koalas but also to learn about Indigenous culture. The center also features a hospital dedicated to treating injured and displaced koalas.

I met a volunteer named Anna, who shared stories about koalas that cannot return to the wild, like Nigel, a koala who lost a leg due to a fence. Such stories heightened my awareness of the dangers that koalas face.

Conservation Activities at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, operating for over 50 years, has treated thousands of koala rescue cases. The dedicated staff here work tirelessly to rehabilitate koalas, with many currently in a fostering program for eventual release back into the wild.

Recently, a fundraising campaign raised 8 million AUD to support this breeding program, but further help is still needed through visitor fees and donations. Conserving koalas not only benefits them but also helps protect the broader ecosystem.

Sustainable Travel and Glamping Experience

At the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, I discovered beautiful glamping tents nestled within koala habitats. All profits from this glamping site go towards supporting rehabilitation at the nearby koala hospital. Sitting on my tent's balcony, I enjoyed wonderful moments of relaxation with a cocktail while taking in the surrounding nature.

Remember, if you want to see koalas, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon – the best times to catch them moving around.

To reach New South Wales from Vietnam, you can fly from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi (HAN), with flight times of about 10-11 hours, usually with one or two layovers in major cities like Sydney or Melbourne. Vietnamese travelers need a tourist visa, valid for up to 3 months.
