Discovering Jamaica is not just about its stunning white-sand beaches, but also its rich culture and heritage. Learn about must-see places and experiences that you shouldn't miss.
Discovering Jamaica's Culture
When you think of Jamaica, delicious dishes like jerk chicken, reggae music, and sprawling white-sand beaches come to mind. However, this Caribbean island has much more to offer, including its vibrant culture, heritage, and rich history. Beyond the music of Bob Marley, Jamaica is home to numerous cultural destinations, from the history of the Maroon people to exciting ecotourism activities.
During my time in Jamaica working on a film project, I had the chance to meet artisans and a deaf community striving to create a sustainable future for tourism. If you have just 5 to 7 days to explore Jamaica, this guide will help you plan and make the most of your time.
When to Visit Jamaica
The most popular time to visit Jamaica is from December to April when the weather is dry and the beaches are inviting. However, if you're not a beach lover and don't mind a bit of rain, the weeks at the end of November and in May are also great options with more affordable prices. The Carnival season leading up to Easter Sunday (in March or April) is a lively time, but be sure to plan ahead. Jamaica is in a hurricane-prone region, so be cautious from June to November when the risk of severe weather is higher.
Where to Stay in Jamaica
If you're heading to Jamaica for a beach getaway, the northwest coast is the ideal spot, especially if you're flying into Sangster International Airport. Montego Bay boasts some of the best all-inclusive hotels, but you might also consider staying at resorts about a 20-minute drive away from the center to avoid the crowds from cruise ships. From Negril to Ocho Rios, there are plenty of beachfront resorts to choose from.
For those looking to explore Kingston, seek out safe neighborhoods for your stay. I stayed at Medallion Hall Hotel, which had security and was close to restaurants. Keep in mind that hotel prices in Kingston can be higher compared to resorts in the northern part of the island.

Getting Around Jamaica
When booking your flight to Jamaica, note that there are two main airports: Sangster International Airport and Norman Manley International Airport. The travel time between these two airports can be lengthy. If your plan is to explore the northern coast, fly into Sangster. On the other hand, if you're headed to Kingston, Norman Manley is your best bet.
While getting around Jamaica, especially for the first time, it’s advisable to use official taxis or drivers arranged by your hotel. Uber is also available in major areas. If you prefer more freedom, renting a car is an option, but be cautious of traffic and road conditions.
Must-Do Experiences in Jamaica
If you’re interested in snorkeling, Jamaica offers some fantastic spots. Montego Bay Marine Park is a great starting point with the Doctor’s Cave reef. For diving enthusiasts, check out Devil’s Reef near Ocho Rios, but you’ll need an advanced diving license. Other activities like bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae River are also not to be missed.
Don’t forget to try the famous jerk chicken, paired with a cold Red Stripe beer. The resorts near Little Dunn’s River Falls are also wonderful places to unwind by the refreshing waters.
Exploring Maroon Culture
You can’t visit Jamaica without acknowledging Maroon culture. These are the people who escaped from plantations and formed communities to resist oppression. Learn about their history and culture at cultural centers, especially in Portland. I had the opportunity to stay in Accompong and was truly impressed by the hospitality and rich culture of the area.
Conclusion
Jamaica is not just about beautiful beaches; it’s also a destination filled with diverse and rich cultural experiences. Make sure to plan well so you can enjoy everything this island has to offer. With the information provided, I hope you have an exciting and memorable trip to Jamaica.
