Introducing India's Women Rickshaw Services

In India, women are gradually taking over the rickshaw industry, which has traditionally been male-dominated. Thanks to initiatives like the Pink City Rickshaw Company in Jaipur and Holy City Rickshaws in Varanasi, many low-income women have found opportunities to join the workforce while providing unique experiences for tourists exploring these vibrant cities.

Exploring Jaipur - The Pink City

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is a must-visit destination when traveling in India. Known as the "Pink City," it boasts stunning architecture and breathtaking landscapes. Visitors will be captivated not only by the striking pink buildings but also by the lively street scenes filled with fresh flower vendors and snack stalls.

Notable Changes in the Rickshaw Industry

During an eight-day journey through India, our group noticed that all taxi, bus, and rickshaw drivers were men. However, in Jaipur, the emergence of the Pink City Rickshaw Company introduced a refreshing change. This project not only creates jobs for women but also symbolizes a shift in Indian society.

Since its launch in 2017, the Pink City Rickshaw Company has recruited and trained over 200 women to operate and maintain their electric rickshaws. Initially, attracting women to participate was a challenge, but gradually, many have come to see this opportunity as a means to address their financial needs.

Renu Sharma - An Inspiring Journey

Renu, one of the first women to join Pink City, shares the challenges she faced when she decided to change careers. Previously, she held various jobs that offered little freedom. Now, driving a rickshaw has provided her with independence and a better income.

Financial Potential and Future Prospects

According to ACCESS Development Services, a nonprofit supporting this initiative, each driver can earn around 500 to 600 rupees per trip, equivalent to over 150,000 VND. Moreover, with the growth of delivery services, Pink City is creating additional job opportunities for hundreds of other women.

Changing the Workplace

Furthermore, female drivers receive training in mechanical repairs. Many have been able to purchase their own rickshaws and start their own businesses, marking a significant step toward their financial independence. Joshi, a marketing expert at ACCESS, notes that as these women become entrepreneurs, they not only contribute to the company but also create opportunities for themselves and their families.

A Meaningful Travel Experience

Taking a ride with the Pink City or Holy City rickshaws not only offers tourists exciting experiences but also supports local women. Intrepid has partnered with Pink City since its inception, making it an integral part of our female travelers' journey.

At the end of our trip, our group expressed our gratitude to the drivers with warm handshakes. Despite the language barrier, I felt a deep connection and respect between us.

Helpful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
