I just returned from an exhilarating journey through Honduras, where the breathtaking Pulhapanzak waterfalls have captivated visitors since the 1960s and even inspired Walt Disney while creating The Jungle Book. Standing before this majestic sight for the first time filled me with excitement. The untouched beauty of the waterfall, nestled beside Lake Yojoa — the only natural freshwater lake in Honduras — is truly beyond words.

When I learned about the zipline soaring above the falls, I didn’t hesitate to give it a try. Gliding above the rushing waters below was an unforgettable experience. The thrill and excitement of flying over the waterfall felt more exhilarating than any cartoon I had ever seen.

Connecting with Maya Heritage

But Honduras offers more than just natural beauty; its rich cultural heritage is another reason I fell in love with this country. One of the must-visit spots is Copán, a stunning archaeological site that once served as a political and religious center of the Maya civilization. With over 1,800 hieroglyphic inscriptions adorning the Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza, Copán has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.

Witnessing the grand architecture from the 5th to the 9th century left me in awe of the Maya's ingenuity. Notably, the ancient team sport pok-ta-pok was once played here, showcasing the complexity and cultural depth of the local inhabitants.

Local Culinary Experiences

I chose to stay at Marina Copán, an ideal base for exploring the charming town of Copán Ruinas and its cobblestone streets. Here, I savored local cuisine, with the standout dish being chicken cooked with sos loroco, an edible flower found only in Central America. Thanks to the warm guidance of the locals, I also visited El Lugar del Té y Chocolate, a delightful spot showcasing chocolate and tea products made from local cacao, offering a unique culinary experience.

Community Tourism: A Deeper Dive into Honduras

Community tourism is a fascinating experience in Honduras. I had the opportunity to tour the Reserva Natural Luna del Puente, a sanctuary that cares for over 300 species of birds. This commendable effort is led by the Fanny Suazo Lang family, who have dedicated their lives to environmental conservation.

Meeting the wonderful women of this family was truly memorable. They not only guided me through the reserve but also shared meaningful stories about the revival of nature in the area. This visit certainly provided deeper insights into the culture and people of Honduras.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

Before embarking on your adventure to Honduras, be mindful of visa requirements. Vietnamese citizens need to secure a visa prior to entering Honduras, which can typically be obtained at the Honduran embassy or other diplomatic representations. The visa fee is approximately 1 million VND.

Traveling from Vietnam, you can fly into San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa, often with connecting flights through the USA or Mexico. Round-trip airfare from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is around 20 million VND, depending on the travel season.

The currency in Honduras is the Lempira, with an exchange rate of about 1 Lempira = 1.2 VND. It’s advisable to withdraw cash when in larger cities, as many small shops only accept cash payments.
