Guadalajara, the second-largest city in Mexico, consistently attracts visitors with its unique art scene, rich culinary offerings, and lively ambiance. For those looking to immerse themselves in a bustling lifestyle, this city has it all—from lively bars to impressive art galleries.

My first day in Guadalajara began with bright sunshine and a slight hangover from the previous night’s festivities. I enjoyed agave-based spirits at a cozy bar called Mezonte and danced joyfully at Pare de Sufrir, a bar whose name is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face.

Cultural Heritage and Distinctive Art

To ease my headache, I made my way to the Guadalajara Cathedral, a stunning architectural blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Spanish Renaissance styles. The dome mural at Hospicio Cabañas, painted by José Clemente Orozco, left a profound impression on me. The frescoes here depict Mexico's tumultuous history from colonial times to modernization.

Such artistic masterpieces can evoke tears in anyone. I have returned to this city many times, each visit leaving me with a sense of longing. Guadalajara is not only known for its pleasant climate but also for its laid-back lifestyle and the warm hospitality of its people.

Guadalajara is also famous for its unique crafts, ranging from pottery to woven textiles. At Mercado San Juan de Dios, a large public market, I strolled through stalls filled with food, clothing, and everyday goods. This market is not just a shopping destination; it’s a vibrant cultural space where you can truly feel the pulse of the city.

Oliver Pendragón, a young architect, guided me through notable architectural sites. He shared that the destruction of historic buildings for modernization is a significant loss for the city. Indeed, Guadalajara has lost many valuable heritage sites during its development.

Special Highlights of Guadalajara

This city is brimming with exciting activities. If you’re an art lover, designer Francisco Chavarría took me on a tour of La Americana, regarded as the cradle of modern architecture in Guadalajara. As we walked, he pointed out various buildings showcasing unique styles, from Beaux Arts villas to functionalist schools.

I must also mention Casa Bosque Eduviges, where I stayed. The villa has been beautifully restored, offering an exceptional experience for visitors.

My journey didn’t just revolve around architectural wonders. I also attended art exhibitions at Plataforma, a contemporary art space. Here, young artists and designers are reshaping Guadalajara's identity with fresh, innovative ideas.

If you have the chance to visit Guadalajara, don’t miss out on trying local delicacies like birria (a type of meat stew) and various tequila-based drinks. An average meal costs around 300,000 VND.
