Exploring Granada: A Colorful Colonial City in Nicaragua

Welcome to Granada

Arriving in Granada on my motorbike felt like stepping into a vibrant painting. After days of wandering through the serene landscapes of Nicaragua, being suddenly surrounded by horse-drawn carriages, colorful colonial buildings, and cobblestone streets made me feel like I had entered an entirely different world. The nearby Lake Nicaragua adds to the charm that captivates you from the moment you arrive, despite the challenging cobblestone roads for both me and my bike.

Exploring Granada

Before visiting, I had heard many travelers rave about Granada being a must-see destination in Nicaragua. I imagined the colonial architecture would remind me of cities like Antigua in Guatemala or San Juan in Puerto Rico, and I was right.

Upon arrival, I found a hostel nestled in the old town, parked my motorbike, and began exploring the city on foot. What surprised me the most was that Granada offered more than just its beautiful colonial center; it was filled with other intriguing experiences. In conversations with locals and fellow travelers, I often heard about the Islets of Granada – a collection of 365 charming little islands scattered across Lake Nicaragua. Deciding to explore these islands became one of my favorite experiences in Nicaragua.

Discovering the Islets

A boat ride through the tranquil canals, observing the wildlife, and witnessing a completely different aspect of lakeside life made me forget the colorful streets I had just traversed. The Islets became one of the unexpected highlights of my trip, and this is just one of many reasons why Granada deserves a spot on any Nicaragua itinerary.

Getting to Granada

Granada is located in western Nicaragua, about 45 km southeast of the capital, Managua. It is known as one of the oldest colonial cities in Central America, which is one of the reasons I was drawn to it. Its location makes it easy to include in most Nicaragua itineraries, situated between popular destinations like Ometepe Island, León, Managua, and San Juan del Sur.

Traveling from Managua to Granada is quite straightforward. Most international travelers arrive in Nicaragua via Managua, making Granada one of the easiest stops after landing. The journey takes about 45 minutes to an hour by shuttle, taxi, or bus, so this is often the first stop on a Nicaragua adventure.

How to Reach Granada from Other Locations

From Ometepe Island: If you're coming from Ometepe like I did, you can take a ferry from Moyogalpa or San Jorge back to the mainland and continue by bus or shuttle to Granada.

From León: Granada is about 2.5 to 3 hours from León. Buses are available on Busbud, but many travelers opt for shared shuttles for a quicker and more comfortable ride.

From San Juan del Sur: The journey from San Juan del Sur, one of Nicaragua's popular beach destinations, takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on the mode of transportation. Granada is a great stop between the Pacific coast and Lake Nicaragua.

Where to Stay in Granada

Granada offers a range of hostels and budget-friendly hotels, but there are also more upscale accommodations available. Depending on your preferences, there are plenty of options to choose from. I stayed at Hostal Mochilas, which had great amenities and a pool right outside my room, perfect for those hot days.

Activities You Should Try in Granada

When I arrived in Granada, I noticed that most people were leisurely strolling around the city. Perhaps this is the ideal city to explore on foot, a pleasant change from my fast-paced motorbike itinerary.

• Stroll Through the Colonial Streets: The historic center of Granada is compact and easy to explore. You can comfortably wander and admire the colonial architecture while searching for local cafes.
• Visit the Islets: Take the time to explore the small islands, where you can soak in beautiful views and have close encounters with nature.
• Enjoy Local Cuisine: Granada also boasts numerous restaurants and eateries serving unique dishes, so make sure to try some of Nicaragua's specialties.
