If you’re a nature lover and want to see the tallest wax palms in the world, Salento is undoubtedly on your must-visit list in Colombia. These towering palms reach over 60 meters high, creating a surreal landscape, especially at sunset or in the early morning mist. While the Cocora Valley has retained its natural beauty, Salento has gradually transformed into a bustling tourist town with numerous hostels and hotels popping up everywhere.

Filandia - A Perfect Alternative

Filandia is an intriguing destination if you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Salento while still enjoying the stunning wax palms. Just a 30-minute drive from Salento, Filandia offers a more peaceful atmosphere, preserving the charm of a small town with its colorful architecture and rich culinary scene.

In Filandia, you’ll find many third-wave coffee shops serving delicious beverages made from local beans. I had the pleasure of visiting Helena Adentro and Cultivar, where I enjoyed fantastic cuisine while soaking in the sunset amidst lush green hills.

I chose to stay at Bidea Hostel, a cozy and friendly place. If you're looking for something a bit more upscale, consider El Reloj Casa. From Filandia, you can engage in a variety of exciting activities such as visiting coffee farms, biking down to Quimbaya, or exploring hidden waterfalls.

Getting to Filandia and Cocora Valley

From Armenia, you can catch a bus to Filandia that runs approximately every 20 minutes, with the journey taking about 45 minutes. If you’re coming from Pereira, it will take about an hour. Here’s a little tip: If you arrive in Armenia from the direction of Pereira or Manizales, ask to stop at Las Cruces to save some time.

You can travel from Filandia to Salento by jeep for 5,500 COP each way, and then catch another jeep from Salento to Cocora Valley. The round trip fare for the jeep to Cocora is around 8,000-10,000 COP.

Exploring the Mystique of Salamina and Valle De La Samaria

Salamina is a small town adorned with colorful colonial houses nestled in Colombia's coffee region. Though it’s not widely known, Salamina is worth exploring for its breathtaking views and vibrant local life. From here, you can visit Valle de la Samaria, a fantastic option for those seeking a unique experience away from the crowds.

To reach Valle de la Samaria, you’ll need to travel from Samaria to the village of San Felix. I stayed at Bonsai Hotel Salamina, a popular choice for budget travelers, offering tidy rooms and a friendly atmosphere.
