Exploring the Dolomites: A 5-7 Day Itinerary for Conquering the Italian Mountains

Introduction to the Dolomites

Located in northeastern Italy, the Dolomites are a stunning mountain range perfect for exploration over a period of 5 to 7 days. Bordering Austria, this region is part of the southern Alps and is one of the most magnificent natural wonders I've encountered in Europe. I couldn't stop snapping photos!

Day 1: Arriving in Venice

The first day of my Dolomites itinerary was simply about kickstarting the journey to the mountains, with a few interesting stops along the way. I flew into Venice in the morning, picked up my rental car, and drove straight to Lago di Carezza (Karersee).

I recommend renting a car through Sunny Cars, as they offer free cancellation and include insurance. Parking near the lake costs 3 EUR per hour, and you can walk through a tunnel to reach the lake.

Day 2: Exploring Seceda

Experiencing the morning light at Seceda is a must. This is one of the most famous spots in the Dolomites, characterized by its towering cliffs reaching up to the sky, often draped in clouds.

After enjoying coffee at the main refugio, I had a fantastic morning hiking across the plateau beneath the impressive peaks. I recommend following the marked paths to capture stunning photos.

Day 3: Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi)

Opposite Ortisei, Seiser Alm is the highest alpine meadow in Europe, easily accessible by cable car. Arriving here early in the morning (8:30 AM), I was greeted by views of green hills, wooden houses, and the magnificent mountain range.

I hiked a 4.4 KM loop back from the cable car. However, be aware that some areas are fenced off (private property), so please adhere to the signage and avoid those restricted zones.

Day 4: Driving the Sella Ronda Loop

On the fourth day, I hopped in the car and explored a part of the Sella Ronda Loop. This route is simply breathtaking, showcasing incredibly impressive natural scenery. I truly loved driving through these beautiful landscapes.

Where to Stay and Eat in Ortisei

In Ortisei, I chose to stay at Casa al Sole, a charming little retreat run by a couple. The breakfast here was delicious, and it's just a short walk to restaurants and the cable car. This is one of the best places to stay in the area!

Tips for Exploring the Dolomites

Be well-prepared for your trip! The weather in the Dolomites can change rapidly, so remember to bring a waterproof jacket and various layers to keep yourself protected. Especially, good grip shoes are essential when hiking up the mountainous paths.
