Dive into the rich musical heritage of New Orleans through unique jazz tours and learn about the evolution of this iconic genre.
Discovering New Orleans' Jazz Heritage
New Orleans, renowned as the birthplace of jazz, offers visitors a chance to explore its unique musical legacy through an exciting new VIP tour by Intrepid Urban Adventures. Our guide, Kristi Vickers, a local who grew up in the city, leads us on a journey that delves into not just the music, but the vibrant culture of this remarkable place.
Under the shade of centuries-old trees in Congo Square, a historic gathering place for the Choctaw people, Kristi explains that this area was once known as Bulbancha, which means "land of many voices," reflecting the cultural diversity that defines New Orleans.
A Musical Timeline
In the 18th century, during the French and Spanish colonial periods, enslaved Africans in Louisiana would gather on Sundays at Congo Square to play drums, dance, and worship. These rhythms laid the groundwork for jazz. Over the decades, European musical styles blended with local traditions, creating a distinct sound that continues to resonate with audiences today.
The origins of jazz are deeply intertwined with the historical context in which it emerged. Kristi highlights the importance of understanding the racial discrimination and Jim Crow laws that shaped the culture and music of New Orleans.
Connecting Generations Through Music
“Jazz is a fantastic way for people to connect without needing to talk; you just pick a tune and have fun,” says Tavarus Armour, a young local musician. Along with other members of the Second Line Arts Collective, they not only preserve jazz culture but also help the next generation build sustainable music careers.

Tavarus, along with Gregory Agid, co-founder of SLAC, collaborates to create vibrant experiences during the tour, immersing participants in an inspiring musical atmosphere. He emphasizes, “Every generation can add a little flavor to the tradition.”
Must-Visit Musical Destinations
Upon arriving at the bustling Bourbon Street, I decided to stop by Fritzel’s, one of the oldest jazz clubs in the area. Kristi notes, “Fritzel’s is the only true jazz club on Bourbon Street. Jazz and drinks, that’s all you need!” The atmosphere here is welcoming, with artists performing closely for the audience.
As the lights dimmed, the four-piece band began to play improvised tunes, showcasing the creative spirit of jazz. By the end of the night, we ventured to 30°/-90° on Frenchmen Street, where the lively atmosphere was further enhanced by funk music.
Music is Life in New Orleans
Music is not just a part of New Orleans culture; it is the very essence of life in the city. When you understand how jazz reflects the unique history of the place, you’ll see it woven into every aspect of the local culture. It represents ancestral heritage, community, and a language that has evolved sustainably since the days of Bulbancha.
