Deng Wen Ji - A Culinary Paradise in East Village

Deng Wen Ji 鄧文记 is quickly becoming a favorite among food lovers in East Village, Singapore. Not only is it famous for its Hokkien Mee, but it also serves up fantastic claypot rice and wanton mee. You can indulge in these three signature dishes of local cuisine all in one spot. Despite undergoing a brand change and renovations over the years, Deng Wen Ji continues to delight its patrons.

In 2021, the restaurant transitioned to serving zi char dishes like hor fun and har jeong kai (marinated chicken). Interestingly, it was previously known as Eng's Wanton Mee and Claypot Rice before rebranding to Deng Wen Ji. Even with the name change, the recipes remain true to their roots, perhaps even tastier than before.

Must-Try Dishes

My family visited around 5:30 PM on a Sunday, and we were immediately struck by the bustling crowd. We opted for outdoor seating since the indoor area felt cramped with so many diners. The first dish you must try is the Hokkien Prawn Noodle (S$13.50 for a regular, S$16.50 for a large). Deng Wen Ji's Hokkien Mee is sure to satisfy any palate. The noodles are crispy and aromatic, drenched in a rich prawn broth that beautifully complements the flavor of the pork.

What truly captivated me was the generous amount of egg. A standout feature of their Hokkien Mee is the crispy, fatty morsels that you find in every bite. Each spoonful delivers a burst of deliciousness with the sweet prawn broth, a hint of tang from lime, and those crunchy bits of fat. However, it can be quite rich, so sharing with at least two others is advisable if you want to try more dishes.

Charcoal Claypot Rice - An Experience Worth Having

Next up is the Charcoal Claypot Rice (S$19.80), the restaurant's signature dish, cooked in a clay pot and grilled over charcoal to impart a distinctive smoky flavor. The recipe comes from a chef who previously worked at the renowned Geylang Claypot Rice, boasting over 20 years of experience. Here, the staff are well-trained in mixing and tossing the dish, and they ask us about our preferred sauce quantity—of course, we requested extra!

The rice is perfectly cooked with a crispy bottom layer. It is topped with sweet chicken, flavorful Chinese sausage, and a generous piece of salted fish, making each bite rich and satisfying.

Wanton Mee - An Unforgettable Delight

The wanton mee (S$6 for a regular, S$7 for a large) is a dish that regulars keep coming back for. In fact, after two years since the rebranding, the wantons at Deng Wen Ji have seen some improvements. Instead of being thinly sliced and lightly grilled, they are now grilled over charcoal and coated in a sweet glaze.

Notably, the wantons are heartier now, filled with pork. This is a treat for wanton lovers! Their famous chili sauce remains as spicy and flavorful as ever!

A Memorable Dining Experience at Deng Wen Ji

Inside this humble restaurant lies an exceptional culinary journey. There's nothing better than enjoying delicious food at reasonable prices in such a welcoming space. I recommend coming here with a group of three or more to fully enjoy the generous portions and exquisite flavors.

Be prepared for a potentially long wait in the evenings, so consider arriving early or calling ahead to reserve your claypot rice. And hopefully, loyal customers won't mind too much when I share this hidden gem!
