Starting Your Journey Along the Brda River

Following the TeH2O heritage route, you can explore 19 destinations linked to industry and craftsmanship, all thanks to the city’s proximity to clean water sources. Each stop provides insight into the lives of those who lived and worked here, along with key historical events in Bydgoszcz.

Your first stop could be the Exploseum, a museum situated in an old explosives factory, nestled in the lush green surroundings of the city. You can also visit several characteristic wooden warehouses from the late 18th century along the Brda River, which have now been transformed into museums.

Strolling Along the Bydgoszcz Canal

The Bydgoszcz Canal is the second oldest canal in Poland, constructed in 1771 in just 18 months. It links the Oder and Vistula rivers through the Brda, Noteć, and Varta branches, with 12,000 workers mobilized for its construction. Stretching 24.5 km and featuring six locks, the canal turned Bydgoszcz into an international trade port connecting the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.

Alongside the canal is a walking path where you can view historical locks, notably at Czyżkówko and Okole. The Okole lock was once the backdrop for the famous Polish TV series “Four Tank Men and a Dog” in the 1960s.

Enjoying a River Journey

Taking a stroll along the Brda River or the Bydgoszcz Canal offers a relaxing view of the city. Between May and September, you can visit Rybi Rynek, the former fish market, to board one of the two solar-powered boats named Słonecznik and Słonecznik II.

The journey will take you to Ceglane Most, a curved railway bridge built in 1851, one of the oldest bridges in Poland. Heading east, you’ll reach Słoneczny Młyn, a former grain warehouse now transformed into a hotel.

Visiting the Bydgoszcz Canal Museum

The Bydgoszcz Canal Museum offers free kayak rentals for two hours, perfect for relaxing on a cool stretch of the canal. Before or after paddling, take some time to explore this modest museum, which has been open since 2006.

On the ground floor, you'll find permanent exhibitions about the canal's history, its role in the city’s development, and life alongside it. The displays include models of locks, the old Władysław IV bridge, and full-size wooden boats.

A Vibrant Space by the Water

At a bend in the Brda River lies Mill Island, once home to factories and mills. Today, this area has been transformed into a park and cultural organizations, including the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum.

You can discover artworks by famous Polish painters such as Malczewski and Witkacy at the Modern Art Museum housed in the Red Granary. Here, you can also enjoy views of the old town and breathe in the fresh air by the river.

Seeing Bydgoszcz from Above

Don’t forget to visit Henryk Dąbrowski Park for a panoramic view of Mill Island, the Brda River, and the old town of Bydgoszcz, featuring a 15th-century church. Here, you’ll find a red brick water tower completed in 1900, where you can ascend for a full view of the area.
