As someone who loves early mornings but often skips breakfast, I find that traveling allows me to seek out hotels with complimentary breakfast and indulge in delightful morning meals.
I’m a Breakfast Lover
I’m an early riser who often skips breakfast. Just a cup of coffee and a long walk are enough to get me through until noon. Even on weekends, I usually settle for a green smoothie and a bowl of fruit with yogurt, occasionally adding a slice of toast.
Breakfast While Traveling
However, when I travel, I search for hotels that offer free breakfast. There, I often pile my plate high with pancakes and hash browns, trying every type of sausage alongside poached eggs. Lately, I’ve noticed that buffet spreads are starting to prioritize local dishes over just the usual omelets, pastries, or fruit salads.
Local Cuisine at Buffets
I truly enjoyed the expansive buffets in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, featuring couscous, green tomato shakshuka, curries, and stews. The desserts here are made with chocolate and cashew cream, and the baklava is drenched in local honey. In Seoul, Dutch ovens present soft eggs, fried rice, and dumplings.
The Variety of Hotel Breakfasts
I’ve seen many other travelers pass over French toast sticks, opting instead for tamales and tacos in Mexico or callaloo and salt fish in Jamaica. The diversity of hotel breakfasts reflects how chefs cater to travelers’ everyday preferences while still connecting them to local culture, making hotels a destination for even those not staying overnight.
Experience at The Inn at Little Washington
Last year, I visited The Inn at Little Washington in Virginia, a unique restaurant that has been around for over 48 years, run by Chef Patrick O’Connell, filled with antiques and memorabilia of George Washington. O’Connell serves an exquisite eight-course tasting menu, beginning with carnival-inspired appetizers.

Impressive Breakfast
For overnight guests, the meal continues with an equally impressive breakfast, where slices of smoked salmon are piled onto crispy potato galettes that I still dream about. The Inn makes its own yogurt, served with fruit and homemade granola. My green smoothie came with a selection of fresh juices sourced from various farms in Virginia.
