If you find yourself at Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre in Singapore, you'll likely notice two popular chicken rice stalls with long queues: Hup Hong Chicken Rice and 139 Hainan Chicken Rice. While Hup Hong is well-known, 139 Hainan Chicken Rice is a hidden gem that deserves your attention.

Having visited this stall numerous times since childhood, I decided to revisit it at the suggestion of my boyfriend. Upon arrival, the first thing that caught my eye was the long line of eager customers. Soon after, my boyfriend pointed to the stall, and I instantly knew this was the place I wanted to explore.

Affordable Prices

While waiting for my turn, I took a moment to glance at the menu. Here, chicken rice is priced at just S$3 for a small portion and S$4 for a large one. Char Siew rice is also only S$4. These prices are incredibly reasonable, especially considering that the meal includes two types of meat.

Ordering Recommendations at 139 Hainan Chicken Rice

To sample a variety of dishes, I ordered two servings of chicken rice with different sides. The first was chicken rice with roasted breast meat, Char Siew, and an egg. The second was chicken rice with steamed thigh and roasted pork, totaling S$12.40 for both servings.

Unlike many other stalls that only offer breast meat, this one allows you to choose your preferred cuts, making it easier to enjoy the flavors you love.

A Delicious Experience

As I began my meal, I couldn't resist trying the Char Siew with its sweet glaze. The meat was deliciously sweet, but if you’re not a fan of sweetness, you can request it without the sauce or served separately.

The roasted chicken was generously portioned and incredibly tender. Next, the roasted pork had a thin, crispy skin. A bonus was that the fat content was just right, making it a great choice for those who love grilled meat without feeling overwhelmed.

The steamed thigh was aromatic, with tender and sweet meat that had a delightful crunch. Alongside, there was a colorful mix of bean sprouts and cucumber that made the dish visually appealing. I was also pleased to see a sprinkle of cilantro, which added an extra layer of flavor to the chicken rice.

Inviting Service

Even though I’m not great with spicy food, I decided to try a bit of chili sauce for an extra kick. While I enjoy spice, it was a tad too much for me. Finally, I sampled the soup and was pleasantly surprised to find silky tofu pieces in it, a rare and delightful addition to chicken rice soup.

The soup was refreshingly light, and I ended up drinking the whole bowl. Normally, I’m not a fan of soup with chicken rice, but the one here was truly delightful! If given the chance, I would return and possibly bring my younger brother along, as he also loves chicken rice.

To reach this stall, you can take the MRT to Chinese Garden Station (EW25), exit at Gate B, and walk for about 21 minutes. Alternatively, you can exit at Gate A at Jurong East (NS1/EW24), take bus 98, and get off at Blk 229.
