Introduction to Johor Bahru's Seafood Cuisine
Johor Bahru, a city close to Singapore, is not only famous for its enticing street food but also stands out with its quality seafood restaurants. If you're in search of unique culinary experiences and fresh seafood, let's dive into 10 must-visit seafood spots here, even if navigating the traffic jams at the border can be a bit tiring.
1. Ya Fa Dai Chao
Located at Kedai Kopi Seng in Kechil Pontian, Ya Fa Dai Chao has been serving diners for over 10 years. One interesting feature here is that customers can bring their fresh seafood, and the kitchen will prepare it for you. Behind the restaurant is Pasar Awam Pontian, where you can purchase fresh seafood directly from local fishermen.
During one meal, we spent about RM100 for two pomfret fish and RM85 for a dozen medium-sized prawns. After cooking, the Assam Pedas Pomfret delivered an incredible sour and spicy flavor. Coupled with the prawns prepared in a unique style, both sweet and savory, this is definitely a must-try!
2. Restoran Todak (Orang Asli)
Restoran Todak is perfect for those who love a seaside atmosphere and fresh seafood. Here, you won’t find a traditional menu; instead, the staff will guide you through the dishes available. We tried the snapper and prawns, and both were incredibly fresh.
Be sure to sample the curry prawns, paired with fried mantou buns to enjoy the delightful flavors. This is a spot not to be missed if you appreciate a simple yet rich dining experience.
3. Ikan Bakar Tampin
Nestled in a residential area, Ikan Bakar Tampin is famous for its grilled fish dishes. Be prepared to wait, especially during peak hours. The restaurant boasts over 13 different types of fish, each slathered with spicy sambal.
The prices for prawns are quite affordable, and the grilled fish here is definitely worth trying. This is an ideal place to enjoy an outdoor dinner with family and friends.
4. Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant
If you don’t mind a bit of hustle and bustle, be sure to check out Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant. This venue is known for its quality seafood dishes at very reasonable prices.

5. Restoran Sulam
With over 35 years in the business, Restoran Sulam is renowned for its delicious fish head curry. The dishes here not only boast rich traditional flavors but are also prepared with great care.
The prawn dishes are equally worth a try, such as Nestum prawns or curry prawns cooked in clay pots. This is surely a place for those who love rich and diverse culinary experiences.
6. Grand Bayview Seafood Restaurant
Located at Danga Bay, Grand Bayview Seafood Restaurant offers an open and breezy atmosphere with a lovely sea view. Here, you’ll find abundant live seafood tanks, ensuring your meal is always fresh.
If you enjoy fresh oysters, don’t miss the American oysters here priced at RM23++ each, served with lime and Tabasco sauce.
