A Journey to Rediscover Childhood Memories in Cyprus

One of the most unforgettable memories from my return to Cyprus is the stunning marble plaque located right on Pafos beach. Legend has it that this is where the goddess Aphrodite once stepped onto the shore thousands of years ago. It felt like a scene straight out of Botticelli’s paintings, with the goddess of love emerging from the sea atop a giant shell. Standing there, I silently asked Aphrodite if this place could rekindle the love I felt in my childhood.

Childhood in Lemesos

I grew up in the charming city of Lemesos, a small place brimming with memories. My father is English, and my mother is of Indian descent from Kenya. They chose to settle here in the 1970s and never wanted to leave. However, as I grew older, Cyprus began to feel too small for me. The sense of confinement and aimlessness drove me to seek change in Dubai.

The Complex History of Cyprus

Cyprus is strategically located between Europe and the Middle East, making it a battleground for numerous empires throughout history. From the Assyrians and Egyptians to the Persians, British, and Turks, each has left its mark on this island. The Turkish invasion in 1974 resulted in Lefkosia becoming one of the few divided capitals in the world, creating a psychological burden for its people.

Rediscovering Lemesos

On this return trip to Cyprus, I decided to explore Lemesos in a new way. I began with breakfast at the square in front of the Old Port hotel. Surrounding me were beautifully preserved ancient houses nestled beside the Kebir Mosque, which dates back to the 16th century. I didn't just enjoy the scenery; I could also feel the passage of time.

Strolling through the narrow alleys, I was amazed by how much the city has transformed. Buildings that once lay abandoned have now been reborn as vibrant cafés and restaurants. Here, I met chef Christoforos Tofaridis, who decided to return to his homeland to open a restaurant after working in London. He is dedicated to using local ingredients to create exceptional dishes.

Natural Beauty and Art

While Cyprus is famous for its stunning beaches like Ayia Napa and Protaras, I find greater joy in the quieter, lesser-known beaches of Pissouri Bay and Cape Aspro. I also realized that the people of Cyprus love both the mountains and the sea. The village of Pano Lefkara is a perfect example of this connection, with its quaint streets and ancient houses.

In Lefkara, I met Christina Socratous, who is devoted to preserving traditional crafts. From ceramics to embroidered textiles, Christina skillfully modernizes these items while retaining their historical charm. She has brought Lefkara's artistry to the world through her brand, 'Tradition Now.'

Leaving a Mark

If I ever return, I will undoubtedly seek out the trails filled with childhood memories, savor the local delicacies of Lemesos, and gaze at the endless blue sea from familiar beaches. Cyprus has always held and will continue to hold a special place in my heart.
