Our flight from Vienna to Skiathos with Austrian Airlines was filled with unexpected twists and turns, from airport troubles to memorable moments in the air.
A Rocky Start
Before our flight to Skiathos (JSI), we faced some uncomfortable experiences flying from Miami (MIA). Our first flight was delayed, then canceled, and we had some luggage issues that left us feeling anxious. However, our Air France flights to Paris (CDG) and Vienna (VIE) went smoothly. After a restful night at the Moxy Vienna Airport hotel, we were ready to board our Austrian Airlines flight to Skiathos the next morning.
A Flight Full of Surprises
The 90-minute flight from Vienna was scheduled to depart at 6:10 AM and arrive at 9:05 AM. With the time zone change, our flight time was set at 1 hour and 30 minutes. We were seated in the front row, served by a very cheerful flight attendant who even joked that the flight would last 3 hours and 20 minutes before quickly correcting himself.
As we prepared to land in Skiathos, an unexpected incident occurred. As the plane approached the runway, turbulence intensified, and one of the flight attendants had a tough moment, falling flat on the galley floor. Everyone in the cabin was concerned, but there was little we could do in that precarious situation.
Unwanted Circuits
As the plane began its descent, I thought everything would be fine, but we had to circle back and then attempt another approach. This was due to unfavorable weather conditions at Skiathos Airport, and after flying at nearly 1,500 feet, we had to maintain an altitude of 4,000 feet for about 30 minutes. With poor visibility and heavy rain, none of the passengers felt at ease.
The Decision to Divert
After two unsuccessful landing attempts, the pilot announced that we would divert to Thessaloniki (SKG) for refueling. The flight lasted about 20 minutes, but the stunning views from the airplane window helped ease everyone's worries. We landed in Thessaloniki at 9:56 AM, just 2 hours and 27 minutes after departing from Vienna.

Continuing Our Journey
In Thessaloniki, the pilot and crew worked diligently to keep the passengers informed and at ease. They provided continuous updates, helping us feel more comfortable. After about 80 minutes on the ground, we took off again at 11:19 AM for our second attempt to reach Skiathos.
This time, the flight was only 20 minutes long, but we had to circle once more before attempting to land. Finally, we touched down in Skiathos at 12:07 PM, more than three hours later than expected. The cabin erupted in applause and cheers as we arrived.
A Special Journey Concludes
Despite the stressful journey, everything turned out well. The pilot kept his promise and allowed my son, Miles, to visit the cockpit. The three-year-old was thrilled to see the controls and even got to help adjust the engines.
This experience made the trip even more special, and the fact that my kids didn’t fuss during the flight was a huge relief. Truly, every flight can bring exciting surprises, and this one taught us a lesson in patience and perseverance during our adventure.
Air travel in Europe can be quite complex, yet it’s filled with unforgettable experiences. I hope all travelers enjoy safe and pleasant flights in the future!
