Discover Playa Cativo, a hidden paradise in Costa Rica featuring lush forests and pristine beaches, accessible only by boat.

Exploring Playa Cativo: A Hidden Paradise

We arrived at Playa Cativo during the enchanting twilight hours. The tropical rainforest came alive with vibrant green palm fronds, illuminated by the setting sun. To reach this resort, nestled in a 1,000-acre nature reserve adjacent to Piedras Blancas National Park, visitors must travel by boat. As the boat glided over the rippling waters, I clutched my Imperial beer, savoring its flavor amidst the gentle waves.

Golfo Dulce, often referred to as the "sweet gulf," is about a 45-minute flight from San José. "All the rivers around flow into here, keeping the water pristine," Laura Vega, a local assistant at Playa Cativo, informed us as she welcomed me and two other journalists from Golfito. This location is particularly special as it lies between mainland Costa Rica and the Osa Peninsula, one of the world’s four “tropical fjords,” as Vega pointed out.

Untamed Beauty and Conservation

Golfo Dulce is safeguarded by its surrounding national parks. Behind the hotel lies Piedras Blancas National Park, while on the opposite side of the gulf is Corcovado National Park. Together, these parks create a conservation corridor for over 148,000 hectares of rainforest, home to a plethora of wildlife including monkeys, birds, and reptiles.

Notably, this area is recognized as one of the few places in the world where both Northern and Southern Hemisphere humpback whales come to breed. Golfo Dulce has been designated as the first Whale Heritage Site in Latin America, one of only eight such sites globally. While we didn’t spot any whales during our visit—since the whale season runs from July to October—there were plenty of dolphin and sea turtle pods residing year-round.

A Unique Retreat

Playa Cativo Lodge offers a more intimate connection with nature than typical luxury resorts. Upon entering the main area of the hotel, you’re greeted by open spaces like the bar, restaurant, and lounge, resembling a large porch overlooking the sea. The hotel mainly caters to honeymoon couples and adventurous travelers from Europe.

Playa Cativo features 16 guest houses, or “casitas,” each with its own private pool. The resort is also renowned for its clean energy system, powered 100% by hydroelectric and solar energy. An on-site organic farm supplies 35% of the ingredients for the hotel’s restaurant, ranging from cacao to fresh fruits.

Wildlife Encounters

Cindy Guzman, a guide from Puerto Jimenez, emphasized the significance of Golfo Dulce in wildlife conservation. This area serves as a breeding ground for various species such as sharks, dolphins, and sea turtles. During a dolphin-watching boat trip, the value of wildlife conservation became even clearer when we spotted a venomous snake—one of the few species in Costa Rica without an antidote.

Even if luck didn’t bring us a snake sighting, we were treated to the lively performance of jumping dolphins, creating a cheerful and vibrant atmosphere. After a day of exploration, we often ended with a soak in the warm waters of the gulf, feeling utterly relaxed.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

If you plan to explore Playa Cativo in Costa Rica, keep visa requirements in mind. Vietnamese citizens need a visa before entering Costa Rica. The flight duration from Vietnam to San José is about 22-28 hours, depending on layovers. Round-trip airfare currently ranges from 20 million to 30 million VND.

The cost of staying at Playa Cativo Lodge is approximately $200 per night (around 4,600,000 VND), which includes breakfast and some activities like yoga and wildlife tours. The ideal time to visit Costa Rica is from December to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant.

Be sure to stay updated on entry regulations and environmental protection measures in Costa Rica for a meaningful and safe travel experience.
