Campbell Wilson has stepped down as CEO of Air India after four years at the helm, leaving a mixed legacy at the airline.
Air India CEO Resigns
The Indian airline industry is currently witnessing significant leadership changes. Just weeks ago, IndiGo's CEO Pieter Elbers announced his resignation, and now, Campbell Wilson has also stepped down from his role at Air India.
Announcement from Air India
Air India has confirmed Campbell Wilson's resignation. The airline has established a committee to search for his successor in the coming months. In a statement, Air India revealed that Wilson had intended to leave his position by 2024 and had communicated this to Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.
"Wilson expressed his desire to resign by 2026 and has been working to ensure that the organization and leadership team are prepared for the transition. He will remain in his role until a successor is appointed and takes over," the airline stated.
About Campbell Wilson
At 55 years old, Campbell Wilson hails from New Zealand and became the CEO of Air India in June 2022. Prior to this, he worked at Singapore Airlines since 1996 and became the founding CEO of Scoot, a budget airline owned by Singapore Airlines, in 2011.
Tenure at Air India
Wilson's time at Air India has been marked by notable highs and lows. In contrast to the situation at IndiGo, where the CEO's resignation stemmed from a recent operational crisis, Wilson's planned departure has been anticipated for some time, making it less of a surprise.

Evaluating Wilson's Legacy
Personally, I have mixed feelings about Wilson's tenure at Air India. On the positive side, he has steered the airline in a new direction, and many aspects of the customer experience have improved under his leadership. However, in terms of passenger experience and profitability, Air India still lags behind its goals.
The airline has made strides in restructuring its narrow-body fleet, but progress on long-haul products has been much slower than expected. Currently, Air India operates only one Dreamliner for long-haul flights, featuring a specially designed interior, which is not particularly impressive.
Challenges Facing Air India
The reality is that the airline industry has faced numerous supply chain issues recently. Yet, it’s disappointing to see so little progress on new long-haul cabins after four years, especially when swift changes are needed.
Additionally, Air India has encountered significant challenges over the past year, including airspace closures and the incident involving flight AI171. While these issues are not Wilson's fault, the airline recorded the largest loss in its history, which is not a positive outcome for a company undergoing privatization.
Wilson's Successor
It will be interesting to see who will take Wilson's place. In the case of IndiGo, former IAG CEO Willie Walsh will step in as the new leader. I’m also curious about how Air India will approach its selection process.
Many might assume the airline will hire an Indian national for the role, given the reactions airlines receive when appointing foreign CEOs. However, I’m not sure who would be the right fit. If they opt for another foreign leader, perhaps former American Airlines CEO Doug Parker is available. Or maybe former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce?
Final Thoughts
In summary, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson will resign about four years after initiating the transformation of India’s national airline. While Air India is on the right track, this transformation has yet to meet expectations after four years. It’s fascinating to witness the consecutive resignations of the CEOs of India’s two largest airlines, and I’m eager to see whether Air India will seek a former executive from another major airline. What are your thoughts on Wilson’s resignation, and who do you think should replace him?
