Discover Flores, Guatemala's vibrant town and a perfect stopover before heading to Tikal. Learn about transportation, accommodations, and exciting experiences.
Step Into the Colorful World of Flores
As I boarded a local lancha and watched the stunning sunset over Lake Peten Itza, I knew it was one of the most memorable moments of my trip to Guatemala. In that serene atmosphere, all the worries and stresses from my long journey from Caye Caulker, Belize melted away, leaving me with a sense of peace as the boat glided over the calm waters.
Flores is not just the first stop on my Central American adventure; it also marks the beginning of my motorbike explorations. To get here, I had to navigate a lengthy journey that involved numerous transfers from boats to buses to taxis. As I admired the shimmering lights reflected on the water while leaving the island of Flores for San Miguel, I felt a wave of relief and excitement for the adventures ahead.
Gateway to Tikal
San Miguel is where my friend Gimli and I stayed, and it serves as the gateway to the ancient ruins of Tikal, one of the must-see destinations on my list. Flores stands out as a popular stop for those looking to explore these magnificent Maya ruins. The cobblestone streets, vibrant cafes, and familiar music create a lively atmosphere that made me fall in love with this place from the very first moment.
Let me share some essential information for your stay in Flores.
Best Places to Stay in Flores
- Hotel Casazul: Located along the lakeshore, it offers comfort and convenience.
- Casa Zoila: Close to the dock in San Miguel, this is an ideal budget-friendly option.

Important Information Before Visiting Flores
When you arrive in Flores, keep in mind that this is a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow road. This location is much closer to the Belize border than popular spots like Antigua or Lake Atitlan, making Flores an ideal starting point for those traveling from Caye Caulker to Guatemala.
Flores is situated in the Peten region, known for its vast forests and famous for the Tikal ruins. This area is quite remote compared to other tourist hotspots in Guatemala, so it is often visited by travelers at the beginning or end of their exploration.
How to Get to Flores
If you're planning a trip to Flores, there are several ways to get here depending on your direction. If you're coming from Belize or Mexico, taking a bus or taxi from Belmopan is quite common. After crossing the border, you can easily catch a bus to Flores.
