ETIAS, the new entry permit system for Europe, will be launched by the end of 2026. Read on to find out what you need to keep in mind!

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS, which stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is set to officially launch at the end of 2026 with a fee of 20 euros (approximately 500,000 VND). This system is designed to pre-screen information for travelers from visa-exempt countries entering Europe.

Importantly, ETIAS is not a visa; it is simply a digital entry permit applicable to citizens from visa-free countries such as the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, and many others. This system is anticipated to enhance security and border management across Europe.

Cost and Validity Period

The initial cost of ETIAS was expected to be 7 euros but was raised to 20 euros in July 2025. This fee is considered reasonable given the benefits of the system, particularly as it allows for multiple trips over three years without needing to reapply during that time.

ETIAS will be valid for three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each trip can last up to 90 days within a 180-day period, making it easier for travelers to plan their adventures.

Processing Time and Geographic Applicability

The processing time for applications is quick, typically taking only a few minutes. However, it’s advisable to apply early to avoid any surprises at the airport. ETIAS will be available in 30 European countries, including those in the Schengen Area. Notably, Ireland will not be part of this system.

The list of countries where ETIAS will apply includes: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Additionally, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City will also accept ETIAS, although they are not EU members.

What Changes with the Launch of ETIAS?

The introduction of ETIAS is not expected to cause significant disruptions right away. The European Union has planned for a transition period of at least six months during which travelers may need ETIAS but will not be denied entry if they do not have it. This means that if you have planned a trip for this fall or early next year, you likely won’t need to worry about having ETIAS.

Travelers should simply keep an eye on the official launch date and apply through the official portal. Be cautious of third-party websites that may charge much higher fees just to submit an application that you can complete yourself in about 10 minutes.

Conclusion

ETIAS is coming soon, and it’s not as daunting as many might think. It is merely an online permit costing 20 euros, valid for three years and allowing for numerous short trips to 30 European countries. The key is to stay informed, avoid confusion, and ensure you apply through official channels when the time comes.

For Vietnamese travelers, it’s important to note that traveling to Europe may involve new entry regulation changes. Make sure to gather all necessary information before setting off on your journey.
