A Birthday Surprise That Didn't Go as Planned
Last year, I decided to treat myself to a trip to the island of Rhodes in Greece to celebrate my birthday. However, as soon as I stepped into the hotel, things took a turn for the worse. The room I was assigned on the ground floor had a broken lock, the staff was rude, and drinks were served in old, flimsy plastic cups. Despite the sweltering summer heat, we were only allowed a maximum of two ice cubes each.
To make matters worse, the phone in my room mysteriously disconnected at night without any explanation, as if guest safety was not a priority. The refrigerator was more of a heater for food than a cooler. At the pool, my feet sank into a slippery floor. Strangely enough, when I browsed online reviews about the hotel, I found numerous praises calling it the best place they had ever stayed.
A Fresh Perspective on Exploration
From these experiences, I realized that I couldn't fully trust online reviews. I later embarked on a career as a travel journalist, writing reviews for magazines and publishers. I learned that well-researched travel guides and edited articles are often much more reliable.
However, user-generated reviews are a different story. They are often unfiltered, sometimes fake, and frequently biased rather than truthful. Why do we place so much trust in them? Perhaps it’s time we reignited our instinct to explore and stopped chasing online ratings.
A New Take on Ratings
In this digital age, our shift from merely consulting online reviews to treating them as gospel has become an issue. Hardly anyone orders lunch without the endorsement of at least 1,438 strangers online claiming that dish is delicious. And now, with AI beginning to compile and recreate these reviews, we find ourselves even more trapped in this feedback loop.

How many times have I stood in long lines just to get into a popular restaurant? While living in New York, I grew tired of waiting for those trendy spots. Among my friends, waiting in line often seemed like part of the allure – a badge of honor in the foodie community.
The Dishonesty in Reviews
Many people who leave reviews are often influenced by their circumstances or the company they keep. A study involving 125,000 reviews in New York revealed that diners with family members tended to leave more favorable reviews, while solo diners were often more critical. We typically only see reviews when someone is either excited or angry, rarely do we encounter neutral feedback.
In reality, many customers use reviews as a tool for revenge, pressuring businesses they feel have fallen short. So why do we continue to trust this information knowing it can be manipulated?
Embracing Spontaneity
When we allow our instincts to be dictated by stars and ratings, we lose our sense of spontaneity. We stop wandering down charming little streets or choosing seaside cafés with simple yellow plastic chairs.
Online reviews now seem to dominate every decision we make, from beaches and hotels to day trips. If I lived my life this way, I might have missed out on some truly precious experiences. Once, I dined at a restaurant in Krakow that one review claimed had ‘beautiful decor but terrible service,’ yet the staff there was incredibly friendly and helped me order in Polish.
Exploring on Your Own Terms
Ultimately, I realized that spontaneity and imperfection are not inconveniences; they are often vital ingredients for meaningful experiences. So when you step back into the world, allow yourself to experience things firsthand rather than just opting for adventures others have endorsed. Your instinct to explore is what led you to leave home and travel in the first place.
Why not let it guide you to restaurants, bars, and hidden gems that no one knows about? Let your future choices be yours, whether they turn out to be fantastic or not.
