Should You Fly Through Middle Eastern Hubs Like Dubai or Doha Right Now?

Recently, I've been pondering whether Gulf airlines can fully recover from the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and if so, how long that might take. This question has been on my mind, especially with an upcoming trip to Thailand that I've been planning since long before these events unfolded.

I haven't booked my flight yet because I typically wait until the last minute to snag good award ticket deals. Since Miami lacks direct flights to either North or Southeast Asia, I figured my best bet for a comfortable flight using miles would be to book with a Gulf airline at the last moment. But now, things have gotten a lot more complicated.

What's Causing My Headache?

I noticed that Qatar Airways has opened up business class seats at the lowest award levels for an ideal itinerary, complete with a perfect layover. However, given the current situation, I'm unsure if I should consider this option. Should I keep searching for an alternative route (which may be less convenient)? Or should I book now, hoping that things won’t worsen before my flight? Or should I simply reserve in advance and trust that the situation will improve, knowing that I could cancel for a small fee in the worst-case scenario?

The Pros and Cons of Flying Through the Gulf

There are plenty of great award options available right now! The first clear benefit of flying through the Gulf is that flights are relatively abundant, and the chances of snagging award tickets are quite good. Gulf airlines transport a significant number of passengers from various countries, and as these options dwindle, finding tickets through other regions becomes increasingly challenging.

While I’ve previously mentioned that I’m not overly concerned about the risks of commercial aviation, perhaps this is an issue I should pay more attention to. My perspective has always been that getting into a car presents a greater risk than boarding a plane. So, when weighing the minor risks, I often find it difficult to analyze logically and tend to avoid doing so.

The Risks of Flying Through the Gulf

However, the risks associated with flying through the Gulf are quite evident—heightened safety concerns and the possibility of being stranded if tensions escalate. Another important factor is that Gulf countries are not always accurate in reporting the domestic situation. While I wouldn’t say the risks are overwhelmingly high, the lack of reliable information can understandably cause anxiety for some travelers.

A Tough Decision

I believe the main reason I might avoid flying through the Gulf is due to my family's feelings. I don’t want them worrying about me traveling through that region. Additionally, some have pointed out that insurance may not cover you if you’re in a conflict zone, so everyone must decide how significant this concern is for them.

Indeed, this is a challenging time for major Gulf airlines, reminiscent of the early days of the pandemic. People have valid reasons for wanting to avoid flying with these carriers right now, due to a mix of safety concerns and operational instability.
