Mee+: A Restaurant's Challenging Journey After a Fire Just Four Months After Opening

The Story of Mee+

The journey of two friends, Sydi and Arrell, began with a dream to open a restaurant serving Malay cuisine. After months of hard work, they launched their cozy eatery, Mee+, which seats only 14 people, at 477 Tampines Avenue 43 in April 2026. From day one, they received an enthusiastic welcome from the locals, especially the elderly residents nearby.

Highly Rated Food Quality

During my visit in the first week of operations, I was thoroughly impressed by their mee rebus—a signature Malay dish known for its rich and traditional flavors.

An Unexpected Disaster

However, on September 3, 2026, an unfortunate event occurred when an explosion in the electrical distribution box caused a fire at the restaurant. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at 8:20 AM. Approximately 20 people were safely evacuated from the neighboring café and the apartments above the eatery.

Lucky in Misfortune

Fortunately, Sydi and Arrell were not present at the restaurant at that time. Had the incident occurred during operating hours, the consequences could have been far more severe.

Facing Difficult Times

Currently, the restaurant is closed, and Sydi has yet to decide whether they will reopen once things stabilize. They expressed their gratitude to everyone on their Instagram for the support received over the past four months.

Community Support

On social media, many have sent encouraging messages, including one individual who is ready to organize a campaign to rally local mothers in Tampines to continue supporting the restaurant if they reopen. Personally, I have recommended Mee+ to several friends living in Tampines, and most of them have become fans after trying the food.

Was the Electrical Issue the Cause?

Another question being raised is whether the explosion was related to electrical overload, high humidity, and condensation issues in the restaurant, or simply due to poor electrical systems. Investigations are still ongoing.
