Conquering the Adolf Munkel Trail to Geisler Alm in Italy
One of the most memorable hiking experiences in the Dolomites is undoubtedly conquering the Adolf Munkel Trail to Geisler Alm. We began our circular journey from Zanser Alm, where you can immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of pine forests, lush green meadows, babbling brooks, and charming little waterfalls.
Along the way, you might even encounter grazing cows or the sight of wild horses. It’s truly a fantastic experience for nature lovers!
Essential Information About the Trail
- Trail: Adolf Munkel Trail (Adolf Munkelweg), Route Number 35
- Length: Approximately 9 km
- Duration: 3–4 hours
- Elevation Gain: From 400 to 455 meters
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Route Type: Circular
- Starting Point: Zanser Alm
- Dog-Friendly: Yes, we saw plenty of adorable dogs!
- Family-Friendly: Yes, but not suitable for strollers
How to Get to Geisler Alm
You should park at the Zanser parking lot to start your journey to Geisler Alm. We paid 10 EUR for parking (cash only), and if you’re in a camper, the fee is 16 EUR. Try to arrive as early as possible for a good spot.
As for the route, we chose to go clockwise and recommend you do the same. This direction allows you to start in more diverse areas, featuring streams, breathtaking scenery, and lush forests.
Details of the Journey
The journey begins with a delightful walk alongside a stream, with stunning mountain peaks as your backdrop. The forest offers a peaceful and wild atmosphere, with large moss-covered rocks and vibrant greenery. Even on cloudy days, the rocky peaks that occasionally peek through add to the dramatic scenery.
If you’re lucky enough to have a clear day, the views are even more spectacular. Following the winding cobblestone path through the pines, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of towering mountains—a sight not to be missed!

Rest Stops Along the Way
As you exit the forest, you’ll pass three mountain huts. Here, we found ourselves quite hungry, and these spots are perfect for a quick break or a meal.
- Geisler Alm: Our favorite, known for its beautiful location and comfy wooden benches.
- Gschnagenhardt Alm: Less frequented, serving traditional dishes like Schlutzkrapfen (stuffed pasta).
- Dusler Alm: A quiet hut, ideal for a peaceful rest.
How to Visit Geisler Alm
The best way to explore is by car. From the Zanser parking lot, you’ll start your hike from there. The parking fee is 10 EUR per day, or 16 EUR for campers, payable in cash.
We recommend renting a car in Italy through Sunny Cars, which offers free cancellation and insurance included. If you’re staying in Val di Funes, ask your hotel about the DolomitiCard, which grants a 50% discount on parking fees at Zanser Alm.
When to Go?
The ideal time to visit Geisler Alm is from late June to September when the weather is warm and hiking conditions are perfect. During this time, you’ll see vibrant green fields and sunshine, creating a stunning backdrop.
Start your day early, ideally before 10 AM, to avoid the crowds, especially during the busy summer months. The best time to visit is from May to early October, and we went in early July.
Some Hiking Tips
Dress appropriately: You don’t need professional gear, but make sure to wear good-grip shoes, especially on the rocky paths. Weather in the Dolomites can change quickly, so be prepared with layers and a waterproof jacket.
Bring enough water. While we highly encourage stopping at the huts (rifugi) to eat and refill your water, it’s also essential to carry enough water for your journey.
In Conclusion
There’s nothing quite like sitting back on a wooden bench, gazing at the majestic mountains after a long hike. Enjoying a delicious Kaiserschmarrn in such a beautiful setting is truly an unforgettable experience!
