Emma Straub and Her Journey to Discover Unique Bookstores

In her latest novel, American Fantasy, Emma Straub introduces the tale of two middle-aged sisters embarking on a trip to celebrate a 90s boy band. Emma reveals that before writing this book, she had never been on a fan cruise and found the idea quite daunting. However, after taking a fan cruise for research purposes, she had an amazing experience.

Now, Emma has discovered how to enjoy seaside vacations, a topic she discussed in her conversation with Condé Nast Traveler. She is also a co-owner of a bookstore in Brooklyn called Books Are Magic. During their chat, Emma shared the joys of placing her characters on journeys, her experiences in Italy with her children, and some fun tips for snagging free hotel goodies.

When Travel Becomes Inspiration

Emma explains that putting her characters on a journey allows her to break free from daily routines. Just taking the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan makes her feel like everything has changed, and that’s when she experiences something different. "Everyone wants to be a different version of themselves when they go on vacation," she shares.

After her initial research trip, she traveled with her husband’s family, including a memorable trip to Alaska. "I’ve recommended it to everyone I know, even those who were hesitant about cruising," Emma states.

Writing While Traveling

These days, Emma's life is much busier. She can write anywhere as long as she has time and isn’t disturbed. In the past, she required specific conditions to write, but now, as long as she’s alert and able to work, she can write on planes, trains, or anywhere else.

When it comes to traveling with her kids, Emma feels very comfortable. Her children are now older and can manage themselves on planes without much parental intervention. "I remember the first time I took them abroad; they were old enough to carry their own suitcases and ask for snacks when needed," she reminisces.

Her Most Memorable Trip

Emma’s most memorable trip was visiting Florence, Rome, and Venice. "It was a fantastic trip because my kids were excited and could walk for hours," she recounts. For her, Italy symbolizes the enjoyment of life, and the journey with her children left her with unforgettable memories.

Exciting Cities

During her book tours, Emma is thrilled to visit new cities. She hadn’t been to Seattle since her debut novel was released in 2011. "I love Los Angeles, maybe just because I’m from New York and always feel that contrast here," she shares. "I also love Miami, especially the bookstore Books & Books there, where the staff is incredibly friendly and kind."

She enjoys visiting Houston for the friends she has who sell books there, and especially for Buc-ee’s. "It’s a gas station, but if you like quirky things, it’s like paradise!" Emma laughs.

Adapting to Hotel Stays

Emma always brings an eye mask that can double as headphones to listen to audiobooks while sleeping. "If there’s a good bed and a clean pillowcase, that’s wonderful," she says. She often doesn’t hesitate to take premium products like shampoo and lotion from hotels back home.

She also mentions that the independent bookstores she loves across the country leave a deep impression on her. One of her favorites is White Whale bookstore in Pittsburgh, which she believes has many hidden gems that people don’t yet know about.

Current Travel Style

Emma enjoys interesting coastal towns, particularly chilly beaches in the winter. She’s not a fan of sunshine and sand but loves strolling along the shore. She once visited North Fork on Long Island to celebrate a friend’s birthday and felt it was paradise.

Dreaming of a Trip to India

Finally, Emma shares that she has always wanted to visit India, drawn by its vibrant art, architecture, and cuisine. "I love Indian culture, and I’m waiting for an invitation from the country. If I don’t get one, I’ll just invite myself!"
