American Airlines has revamped its pricing model for Air Tahiti Nui flights, making award ticket pricing more flexible. While this opens up new opportunities, it may also lead to significantly higher costs.

Changes in Air Tahiti Nui Ticket Pricing

American Airlines is shifting to a more flexible pricing model for award flights on Air Tahiti Nui. Instead of fixed prices as before, the costs now fluctuate significantly, with some business class flights reaching up to 383,000 miles for a one-way ticket.

The previous pricing model was as follows:

  • 40,000 miles for economy class - one way
  • 65,000 miles for premium economy - one way
  • 80,000 miles for business class - one way

However, American Airlines no longer publishes a partner fare chart; they now only provide information indicating that these figures are merely starting estimates for one-way flights.

Notable Changes

Travelers have noticed significant fluctuations in award ticket prices. For example, on June 16, a business class flight from LAX to PPT could cost up to 383,000 miles. The following day, thanks to Air Tahiti Nui opening up award space, the business class fare dropped to just 80,000 miles.

Additionally, if “saver” space becomes available, the pricing remains unchanged from previous levels, providing some attractive opportunities for those looking to travel at a lower cost.

Value of Miles

Using 383,000 miles for a one-way business class ticket is quite steep. However, when compared to purchasing a direct ticket for $6,000, some may find this exchange more reasonable.

What concerns me is that the old fixed-price award ticket system, which consistently offered availability at set prices, is gradually disappearing. As partners start adjusting their values, the “great deals” many have come to expect may become less common.

Important Information for Vietnamese Travelers

If you're considering a trip to Tahiti from Vietnam, there are a few important details to keep in mind. First, you'll need to obtain a visa to enter France when flying with Air Tahiti Nui, as Tahiti is a French territory. Visa costs can range from 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 VND, depending on the type of visa.

Secondly, traveling from Vietnam to Tahiti typically requires connections through stops like Los Angeles or San Francisco. Round-trip fares from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to PPT usually start at around 20 million VND or more.

The best travel season to Tahiti is generally from April to October when the weather is dry and pleasant.

Conclusion

American Airlines has introduced a new pricing model for award tickets on Air Tahiti Nui. While “saver” fares are still available on certain days, the flexibility in pricing can lead to very high flight costs. If this expands member availability, it could be good news. However, if all award tickets become linked to revenue fares, we may end up paying a lot for this convenience.
