American Airlines has made the decision to permanently suspend its flights to Doha, marking a significant shift in its operations amid the complex global situation.
Permanently Suspended Flights to Doha
American Airlines has announced that it will permanently cease its flight service from Philadelphia (PHL) to Doha (DOH), following nearly four years of operation. According to Brian Znotins, the airline's Vice President of Network Planning, this decision is final and not just a temporary halt. Initially, the airline had planned to maintain this route until January 2027, but it has now been completely removed from the schedule.
History of the Route
American Airlines began its Doha flights in June 2022, launching from New York (JFK) as part of a strategic partnership with Qatar Airways. However, this service did not last long; by October 2023, American shifted its Doha flights from New York to Philadelphia. This was seen as a route swap between the two airlines, as Qatar Airways simultaneously reduced its flights to Philadelphia while increasing its frequency to New York.
Reasons for Suspension
The decision to suspend flights to Doha is not entirely surprising, especially since Qatar Airways has plans to restore this route, taking over from American Airlines. With this development, American Airlines is left with only long-haul routes to Europe from Philadelphia, as Doha was its only long-haul service to the Middle East.
Pressure from Global Situations
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has posed significant challenges for the airline industry, complicating the restoration of flights to the region. The need to ensure passenger safety alongside profitability has led American Airlines to carefully consider the resumption of this service.

American Airlines' Aviation Strategy
Even though American Airlines and Qatar Airways have a strategic partnership, operating flights to Doha seems to have offered limited value for American. Qatar Airways not only provides superior service quality but also operates with a lower cost structure. This is why many passengers tend to prefer Qatar Airways over American Airlines.
Replacement Flight Plans
American Airlines has announced plans to introduce a new long-haul route to replace the suspended flights to Doha. Meanwhile, Qatar Airways is ready to take on this role, highlighting the increasing competition between the two airlines.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
If you are planning to fly to Doha or other Middle Eastern countries from Vietnam, be aware that there are no direct flights from Vietnam to Doha. Flights typically make layovers in major cities such as Bangkok, Dubai, or Doha. Round-trip ticket prices from Ho Chi Minh City to Doha usually range from 12 to 15 million VND, depending on the booking time and the airline chosen. Additionally, be mindful of visa requirements; Vietnamese citizens need to obtain a visa before entering Qatar.
With this information, we hope that Vietnamese travelers can gain a clearer understanding of the aviation situation and the changes in international flights, allowing them to choose the best travel options for themselves.
