Discover 7 international dark sky reserves in the UK, where you can marvel at the enchanting beauty of the night sky and enjoy incredible experiences.
Exploring International Dark Skies
From April 13 to 20, 2026, we celebrate International Dark Sky Week—an occasion to honor the beauty of the night sky and commit to its preservation. As urban lighting from buildings, vehicles, and streetlights increases, leading to heightened light pollution, the remaining places where one can appreciate the night sky and its twinkling stars are becoming more precious than ever.
Martin Morgan-Taylor, a council member of the International Dark-Sky Association, shares, "We are gradually losing the night due to light pollution, which obscures the night sky, and fewer people can see the Milky Way right from their backyards."
Globally, there are 23 international dark sky reserves, with 7 located in the UK. If you plan to visit, here are some suggestions from Tiffany Francis-Baker, author of the book Dark Skies: A Journey into the Wild Night.
1. Exmoor National Park
The skies at Exmoor are considered some of the darkest in England, with low light pollution allowing visitors to see the Milky Way and thousands of stars with the naked eye on clear nights. This is why Exmoor National Park became the first dark sky reserve in Europe.
Poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth often strolled here at night, dropping small white stones as markers to find their way back. The park also offers numerous camping sites and accommodations that are dark-sky friendly, as well as plenty of spots for sky exploration. The park team provides necessary equipment for stargazing, including telescopes.
Every October and November, Exmoor hosts a Dark Skies Festival featuring activities like guided stargazing, night walks, talks, and workshops with astronomers. A helpful tip from Tiffany: Wimbleball Lake, located 15 minutes northeast of Dulverton, is a great spot to see red deer and starling murmurations at sunset.
2. Brecon Beacons National Park
Brecon Beacons is a mountain range dotted with Bronze Age burial mounds, Norman castles, sheep trails, quarries, and a variety of outdoor activities such as cycling, kayaking, horseback riding, and rock climbing. It is also increasingly renowned for stargazing.
Since 2013, Brecon Beacons National Park has been the fifth international dark sky reserve in the world, attracting both amateur and professional astronomers. On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way, prominent constellations, bright nebulae, and even meteor showers.

Local accommodations offer many “stay and stargaze” options. The picturesque scenery here has inspired numerous stunning astronomical works. Tiffany suggests that the beautiful ruins of Llanthony Priory are one of the park's iconic spots where visitors can enjoy the clear dark sky.
3. Cranborne Chase
Cranborne Chase spans the borders of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire, and Somerset, creating a diverse and rich landscape with many rare plants and animals. Fans of author Thomas Hardy may recognize this area from the opening scenes of his novels. Cranborne Chase was officially recognized as the 14th international dark sky reserve in October 2019.
Over 50% of this area has the lowest light pollution levels in England, with hills like Breeze Hill (262m), Win Green (277m), and Melbury Hill (263m) providing stunning vistas. Stargazing events occur year-round, culminating in the annual Dark Skies Festival in April. A tip from Tiffany: Hambledon is considered one of the best Iron Age hill forts in Dorset and is an ideal spot to spot rabbits and fireflies at dusk.
4. Snowdonia National Park
The stars often appear in the tales of the Mabinogion, a collection of stories written in ancient Welsh. This is why, in December 2015, Snowdonia National Park became the second area in Wales designated as an international dark sky reserve.
Within the rugged mountainous landscape of Snowdonia, you'll have the chance to see the Milky Way, prominent constellations from Orion to the Pleiades, nebulae, and shooting stars. Tiffany suggests Llyn Geirionydd, located 15 minutes west of Llanrwst, as a perfect picnic spot to enjoy the magical night sky.
5. Yorkshire Dales National Park
It is said that each valley in Yorkshire has its own personality. Yorkshire Dales is a land of contrasts, with varying moods and landscapes, even at night. The national park achieved international dark sky reserve status in 2020.
On clear nights, visitors can see up to 2,000 stars and clearly admire the Milky Way. You may also spot planets, shooting stars, the moon, and even the International Space Station. A suggestion from Tiffany: The national park's parking area in Buckden is a fantastic stargazing spot, nestled among the hills of Wharfedale and under the shadow of Buckden Pike.
6. Moore’s Dark Sky Reserve, South Downs National Park
Officially established in 2010, South Downs is the newest national park in England, stretching from the Itchen Valley near Winchester to Beachy Head on the Sussex coast. Just an hour's drive from London, the night sky in South Downs is dark enough for visitors to see the Milky Way with the naked eye from popular viewing points.
Thanks to efforts to reduce light pollution alongside local authorities, South Downs has been classified as 'Bronze' with an average darkness level. This ranking helped the park achieve dark sky status in 2016. A tip from Tiffany: In the Hampshire section of the national park, both Ol and surrounding areas attract stargazing enthusiasts.
7. Dark Sky Reserves
Not only are these dark sky reserves perfect for stargazing, but they also provide valuable lessons about environmental protection. Come and enjoy the wondrous beauty of the night sky in the UK, where astronomical stories and nature intertwine, leaving you with unforgettable memories.
